United States | 1978 | Philip Kaufman
Join us for Halloween at the Cinematheque! In this first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic, Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different, and who later themselves exhibit the same change. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted “replacement”, realizes that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. Kaufman gives the ‘50s B-film sci-fi classic an update that enriches its historical context in line with the larger trend of ‘70s paranoia-focused political thrillers. Sutherland displays utmost skill in going from a cold rationalism to full on frenzy. 116 min.
