Student Life . Student Services . Advising . Changing Your Major

Changing Your Major

After you’ve declared your major, you still can change it. As a result, your academic program may be extended, so it is important to investigate the process of changing your major before making a final decision. The Office of Academic Services encourages you to speak with departmental faculty and students to gain an in-depth view of the new department you wish to enter. Good information paints a clearer picture, so you will feel more confident about your decision.

Steps for Changing Your Major

  1. Complete the change of major form and return it to Office of Academic Services.
  2. Meet with an advisor.
    • Our advisors work with you to integrate the courses you’ve completed in your previous major, such as foundation and liberal arts classes as well as previous major courses that may fit into open studio electives, into your new degree program requirements.
  3. Meet with the chair of your new department.
    • A meeting between you, the head of your new department and an academic advisor is required.  During this meeting, we can fill out and file course substitution forms for any major requirements for which you’ll be receiving credit.
    • During this meeting, you also should discuss why you want to enter the new major as well as your desired goals within the department.
    • Note: Not every course that you’ve taken at CIA will transfer into the curriculum of your new major. Substitutions depend on a variety of circumstances including skill sets needed to perform within the new major. This may extend the length of your academic degree program.
