Cinematheque fills opening in schedule with two new movies
For Immediate Release
Contact: John Ewing
Director of the Cinematheque
CLEVELAND (Ohio) –Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, who was scheduled to appear at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque on Saturday, October 19, has had to cancel her appearance due to personal reasons that will keep her in Belgium.
However, the film she was to have presented on 10/19, her most recent feature ALMAYER’S FOLLY, will still be shown at 7:30pm, as will her 1975 work JEANNE DIELMAN, showing Sunday, October 6, at 6:30pm in what was to have been a “warm up” for her visit. Ticket prices to ALMAYER’S FOLLY have been reduced to $9; Cinematheque members $7; age 25 & under $6.
The Cinematheque will try to reschedule Ms. Akerman for a later date.
The cancellation has opened up three slots in the Cinematheque’s October schedule. These will be filled with two Cleveland first-run films, EUROPA REPORT and OUR NIXON, both described below.
Saturday, October 19, at 9:55pm &
Sunday, October 20, at 8:15pm
USA, 2013, Sebastián Cordero
In this “staggeringly beautiful” (Film Comment) new sci-fi thriller, video recordings from cameras on a spaceship headed for Jupiter are scoured for clues that might explain what happened to the six male and female astronauts on this ill-fated international mission. Did they actually find life on Europa, the planet’s fourth moon, as they set out to do? With Embeth Davidtz, Michael Nyqvist (the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo),and Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). Cleveland theatrical premiere. Blu-ray. 90 min. www.magpictures.com
Sunday, October 20, at 6:30 pm
USA, 2013, Penny Lane
This intimate, eye-opening look at the Nixon presidency is culled from 500 reels of never-before-seen Super 8 color “home movies” shot by high-level White House staffers (including convicted Watergate conspirators H. R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman) between 1969 and 1973. Accompanying the footage are choice audio tracks from TV interviews and secret White House tapes. You’ve never seen the Oval Office, Tricia’s wedding, Nixon’s trip to China (and much more) like this! “A brisk, eye-opening documentary about the Nixon White House as seen from the inside…[A] triumph of editing…A must-see for anyone interested in Americana.” –Variety. Cleveland premiere. Blu-ray. 84 min. www.ournixon.com
Admission to either of these two films is $9; Cinematheque members $7; age 25 & under $6. All movies will show in the Aitken Auditorium of the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd. in University Circle, telephone (216) 421-7450, www.cia.edu/cinematheque
