Assistant Professor Barry Underwood had a busy, productive sabbatical last year. He traveled to half a dozen national parks around the western U.S. to scout locations and take photographs for a new project; completed two artist residencies in New England; took part in nine exhibitions; was featured in more than a dozen magazine and website articles; and rounded out the year with four of his prints selected for Akron Art Museumís permanent photography collection. Add event to my calendar

J. M. (Josh) Tyree is a film scholar, college professor, and former Cleveland resident (and one-time Cinematheque volunteer) who writes regularly for Film Quarterly and Sight & Sound. He has penned two of the books in the BFI (British Film Institute) Film Classics series—one on the Maysles brothers’ 1968 documentary Salesman and one on the Coen brothers’ 1998 cult film The Big Lebowski. Tonight Tyree will introduce screenings of both movies and answer questions and sell and sign books afterwards. See below for details.

Saturday, April 20, at 5:30pm
J. M. Tyree discusses
SALESMAN
USA | 1968 | Albert & David Maysles, Charlotte Zwerin
This direct-cinema classic, one of the key documentary features of the 1960s, follows four different door-to-door Bible salesmen (nicknamed “The Rabbit,” “The Badger,” “The Bull,” and “The Gipper”) as they call on potential buyers in Boston and Miami. The movie was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 1992. J.M. Tyree, who penned the 2012 BFI Film Classics volume on Salesman. will introduce and discuss the movie and sell and sign his book. 35mm. 91 min.

Saturday, April 20, at 8:30pm
J. M. Tyree discusses
THE BIG LEBOWSKI
USA | 1998 | Joel Coen
Jeff Bridges stars in this hilarious Coen brothers classic. He plays “the Dude,” a dopehead, slacker, and bowler who accidentally becomes embroiled in a high-stakes kidnapping scheme. This clever Raymond Chandler knock-off also stars John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, and John Turturro. J.M. Tyree, who co-wrote (with Ben Walters) the 2007 BFI Film Classics volume on The Big Lebowski will introduce and discuss the movie and sell and sign his book. 35mm. 117 min.
