This Is 4K! New 4K Digital Restoration! The Apu Trilogy, Part 1

Pather Panchali

AKA Song of the Little Road
India | 1955 | Satyajit Ray

The late, great Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) is one of the undisputed masters of world cinema; he won a special lifetime achievement Oscar in 1992 shortly before his death. Ray began his career with his signature achievement, the “Apu Trilogy,” a three-part chronicle of the early life of a Bengali village boy, Apu, from a poor family. (We watch him grow from childhood to young adulthood.) The three films always rank high on lists of the best movies of all time, and you can see them in brand new digital restorations this month. Pather Panchali, the first film, introduces us to Apu and his struggling family (father, mother, older sister, and elderly, mischievous “auntie”) who savor simple pleasures when they’re not yearning for an easier life elsewhere.

Music by Ravi Shankar. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 125 min.
