Casablanca (DCP)

United States | 1942 | Michael Curtiz

This beloved movie was the overwhelming choice for “first [regular] film that the Cinematheque should show in its new auditorium” in our recent audience poll. So tonight we’re showing it. But not just once to meet our obligation. We’re showing Casablanca twice: from 35mm film at 7:00 pm and from DCP (digital cinema package) at 9:15 pm. So you can choose which format you prefer. Or you can catch both screenings and compare the formats! (A separate admission is required.) In either version you’ll enjoy Humphrey Bogart as cynical American Rick, who owns a nightclub in polyglot Morocco during WWII; Ingrid Bergman as his old flame, who turns up one day with her Resistance fighter husband wanted by the Nazis; Dooley Wilson as Sam, the singer and pianist who plays “As Time Goes By” again; and Peter Lorre and a host of great character actors in indelible supporting roles. We hope these screenings really do mark “the beginning of a beautiful friendship” between you and our new theater!
