Beeginnings: Hou Hsiao-hsien & the New Taiwanese Cinema

| 1983 | Hou Hsiao-hsien
This three-part omnibus film, one of the heralds of the New Taiwanese Cinema, was produced by Taiwan’s Central Motion Picture Corporation as a vehicle that allowed a trio of promising young filmmakers to direct a movie free of commercial pressures. The great Hou Hsiao-hsien was one of the three, and his opening segment, “Son’s Big Doll,” about a poor man who carries an advertising sandwich board to feed his family, proved a transitional work in his career. All three episodes concern Taiwan’s working poor during the 1960s, and they are based on stories by native Taiwanese writer Huang Chunming, who criticizes capitalism and America’s continuing military presence on the island.
Mandarin and Taiwanese with subtitles. 35mm. 100 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
