Play

France, Sweden | 2011 | Ruben Östlund

Ruben Östlund ‘s inflammatory and squirm-inducing third feature—hailed by critics but condemned by certain Swedish journalists—examines racial attitudes in contemporary Swedish society. Set in Gothenburg and inspired by a true case, the film details how a group of five underprivileged black boys aged 12-14 used head games and intimidation to rob three wealthier, fair-skinned boys around 40 different times between 2006 and 2008. A 2011 New York Film Festival selection. “The rare contemporary film that’s as majestically and gruelingly rigorous in its form as in its thematic interrogations.” –Village Voice.

Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 118 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
