The Films of Ruben Östlund

Involuntary

De Ofrivilliga
France, Sweden | 2008 | Ruben Östlund

Ruben Östlund’s uncomfortably naturalistic sophomore outing assembles a mosaic of modern Swedish society from a series of snapshots of questionable human behavior. Constructed like a string of short films, the movie focuses on people of various ages in multiple settings and situations—from two teenage girls who strip and touch each other in front of a digital camera, to a group of drunken twentysomething men who end up participating in a homosexual act. The movie questions how “civilized” we really are. “Bitterly funny.” –The NY Times (2015).

Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 98 min. Preceded by Östlund’s 12-min. Incident by a Bank (Händelse vid bank, Sweden, 2009), an account of a bank robbery. Special admission $10; members, CIA I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
