France | 1972 | Jean-Pierre Melville
Catherine Deneuve, Alain Delon, and Richard Crenna star in the final film by crime-movie master Jean-Pierre Melville (Le Samourai, Army of Shadows). It’s a typically Melvillian account of friendship and betrayal among a cop, a shady nightclub owner, and the beautiful woman involved with both of them. “High priest of tough-guy mysticism and master of the attitudinous gangster thriller, Melville not only anticipated the French new wave but served as a model for the neo...

Japan | 1937 | Sadao Yamanaka
This period drama is the greatest work by a promising young Japanese filmmaker of the 1930s who died in Manchuria (at age 29) 13 months after his masterpiece was released. Set in 18th-century Edo (Tokyo), the film is a compassionate portrait of an unemployed samurai, his wife, and their impoverished neighbors—all leading hardscrabble lives in a shabby slum plagued by crime, where notions of heroism and honor have lost their meaning. Garrett Washington, visiting assistant...

United States | 1963 | Jack Smith
Critic J. Hoberman calls Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures “the most liberating Underground movie of the sixties…also the most notorious.” (It was banned repeatedly.) Inspired by such trashy and exotic 1940s Technicolor fantasies as Cobra Woman and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, the movie depicts a makeshift harem where an odd assortment of transvestites and women play “dress up” and thrash around, half naked, in a nonstop orgiastic frenzy. “The most important avant-garde film ever...

Belgium | 1975 | Chantal Akerman
As a warm-up for filmmaker Chantal Akerman’s personal appearance on Oct. 19, we present her seminal 1975 film that “changed the face of contemporary European cinema” (J. Hoberman). Rarely screened theatrically due to its extreme length, this groundbreaking masterpiece focuses on a middle-aged Belgian woman (Delphine Seyrig), living in a modest, tidy apartment, who matter-of-factly tackles her daily chores: cooking, cleaning, shopping—and receiving one anonymous man a day who pays for sex. Jeanne’s quotidian existence...

France, Sweden, Thailand, United States | 2012 | Nicolas Winding Refn
Ryan Gosling and an unforgettably malevolent Kristin Scott Thomas star in the stylish and violent new film from the Danish maker of Drive, Bronson, and the Pusher trilogy. It's a languid, cryptic fable of murder and revenge set in a seedy nighttime Bangkok of boxing clubs, brothels, and bars. Gosling's ex-pat drug smuggler locks horns with a stern, sword-wielding Thai policeman known as the "Angel of Vengeance” in a lurid Lynchian landscape that seems part...

The late, great Isuzu Yamada (Lady Macbeth in Throne of Blood) stars in this beautifully photographed major work by Japan's prolific but criminally undershown movie master Heinosuke Gosho. It follows a young girl doomed to a life of prostitution as she slowly comprehends her unfortunate fate. Ann Sherif of Oberlin College will introduce the film and lead a post-film discussion.

Spain | 2013 | Pedro Almodóvar
Pedro Almodóvar's kinky, colorful, and elegantly designed new movie is a lighter-than-air comedy set in the cockpit and cabin of an ill-fated flight from Madrid to Mexico City. Austria, France, Germany | 2012 | Ulrich Seidl
The most uncompromising, uncomfortable, and unforgettable (i.e., best) film we saw at this year’s Cleveland Int’l Film Festival was the second part of Ulrich Seidl’s Paradise trilogy. (All three films stand alone.) Paradise: Faith follows a fanatically religious Austrian Catholic woman whose extreme devotion frequently crosses the line into comedy or cruelty. To reveal more would spoil the film’s shocks and surprises. But this darkly funny, sometimes harrowing drama has virtuosic scenes that will make...

Anna Karina made her Jean-Luc Godard debut in this, the director's second feature (following Breathless). France | 2012 | Claude Miller
Audrey Tautou (Amelie) stars in the final film by veteran French helmer Claude Miller (Garde à Vue, A Secret, The Accompanist), who died last year. Based on François Mauriac's novel, it's a lavish costume drama about a young bride, living a life of luxury on a provincial estate in southwest France during the 1920s, who grows restless and unhappy when she gleans that her unsatisfying marriage lacks the passion that propels other relationships.

Belgium, France | 2011 | Chantal Akerman
Chantal Akerman’s most recent film had the third highest overall metacritic.com score of 2012 (92 out of 100)! An adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s first novel (but updated by many decades), it’s a dreamy, hypnotic film about a brooding European treasure hunter living in the lush jungles of Southeast Asia who tries to reconnect with his estranged, embittered mixed-race daughter, now grown, when she returns home after being educated in Europe. “Five stars (highest rating)…Uniquely enthralling.”...
