Voted best film of 2012 in the Sight & Sound and Village Voice film critics’ polls (it finished #2 in the Film Comment and Indiewire surveys), the new movie by son of Ghoulardi Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights) charts the postwar relationship between an alcoholic WWII vet (Joaquin Phoenix) and a charismatic cult leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose religious/philosophical movement resembles L. Ron Hubbard’s Church of Scientology. Phoenix, Hoffman, and Amy Adams were all nominated for Oscars.
