Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s riveting modern-day thriller, based on an Ed McBain novel. It tells of a wealthy shoe manufacturer (Mifune) who faces a moral dilemma when his chauffeur’s son is mistaken for his own child and is abducted and held for a ruinous ransom. Should he pay it and save his employee’s kid? This thrilling crime melodrama plumbs Dostoyevskian depths and charts the gulf between the haves and the have nots. With Tatsuya Nakadai and Takashi Shimura.
