ACCATTONE opens major Pasolini series Pier Paolo Pasolini's sympathy for Italy’s underclass and his preference for non-professional actors can be seen in ACCATTONE, the director's first film. Set in a squalid section of Rome, the movie focuses on an impoverished young ne’er-do-well (“accattone” or “scrounger’) who scrapes together a paltry living as a pimp and petty thief. Franco Citti (The Godfather) made his film debut in this 1961 Italian classic that will be shown on Saturday at 5:00 pm in a new 35mm print from Italy. The movie opens our 7-week, 15-program series "Pier Paolo Pasolini: Poet and Provocateur." Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
Anna Magnani is MAMMA ROMA in touching Pasolini classic A middle-aged prostitute (the great Anna Magnani) tries to distance herself from her sordid past for the sake of her teenage son in Pier Paolo Pasolini's MAMMA ROMA, a moving 1962 drama that was originally banned in its native Italy. See it in a new 35mm print from Italy on Sunday at 3:30 pm. Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915 stars Juliette Binoche as the troubled French sculptor who was once Rodin's model and lover Juliette Binoche is “mesmerizing” (Variety) in CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915, the new film from France's Bruno Dumont, director of Humanité and Hadewijch. Binoche plays emotionally troubled French sculptor Camille Claudel, one-time model and lover of the more celebrated sculptor Auguste Rodin. Now confined to a mental institution, she tries to convince her doctor that she is sane, while waiting in hope for her poet brother, Paul Claudel. Film Comment says that this new movie is "possibly Dumont’s finest," which is saying a lot. Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Here's a clip from the film.

Amerindie drama I USED TO BE DARKER tells of Irish teen runaway in the U.S.
I USED TO BE DARKER is the third feature by the exceptionally talented young Maryland filmmaker Matthew Porterfield (Putty Hill). It tells of an Irish teen runaway who seeks refuge in Baltimore with her aunt and uncle, both musicians, only to discover that they are in the midst of a tense separation. Adèle Exarchopoulos, star of Blue Is the Warmest Color (see above), has a small role in this movie that premieres locally on Thursday and Saturday. This 1966 movie is "the most famous and certainly one of the most important masterpieces of the Czech film renaissance,” according to Amos Vogel in Film as a Subversive Art. See it Sunday at 5:40 pm in a 35mm print imported from the Czech National Film Archive in Prague.
