Terence Stamp seduces an entire family in Pasolini's provocative TEOREMA Terence Stamp stars in one of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s greatest and most enigmatic films, TEOREMA (THEOREM). Stamp plays a mysterious man who moves in with a wealthy Italian family and proceeds to seduce everyone in the household—from the maid to family members of both sexes and different generations. Silvana Mangano, Laura Betti, Ninetto Davoli, and Anne Wiazemsky star in this 1968 Italian classic that has music by Ennio Morricone. Don't miss it Saturday at 5:00 pm in a new 35mm color print imported from Italy. The Time Out Film Guide calls Teorema “[Pasolini’s] most perfect fusion of Marxism and religion…A film that is both political allegory and mystical fable.” Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be accepted. Wach a trailer here.

BASTARDS is Claire Denis' latest Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Michel Subor, and Lola Créton head the all-star cast in Claire Denis' latest film, BASTARDS, a noir nightmare in which a sailor goes ashore to investigate the recent suicide of his brother-in-law and the possible abuse of his traumatized niece. He uncovers an unsavory, morally bankrupt world of money, power, sex, duplicity, and betrayal. This French film, a 2013 New York Film Festival selection, "grips you entirely," according to The NY Times. Keith Uhlich in Time Out New York named it last year's best movie. No one under 18 will be admitted when we show it on Saturday and Sunday. Here's the trailer.

AIGA Cleveland co-presents DESIGN IS ONE, new film about Vignelli Associates Lella and Massimo Vignelli are two of the world’s most influential designers. Among myriad accomplishments in many fields, they designed the NYC subway map and also popularized Helvetica in the U.S. The Italian-born couple is profiled in DESIGN IS ONE: LELLA & MASSIMO VIGNELLI, a new documentary showing Thursday at 8 pm in conjunction with the Cleveland chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design. Milton Glaser, Michael Bierut, Peter Eisenman, and others are also in the movie. AIGA Cleveland members will be admitted for only $7. Everybody else can pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member) by printing this email and presenting it at the box office. It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the film's trailer.

THE VIVIAN MAIER MYSTERY screens for free on Thursday! The late street photographer Vivian Maier is revealed in THE VIVIAN MAIER MYSTERY, a new documentary that receives a free screening Thursday at 6:45 pm. Born in New York in 1926, raised in France, and living and working as a nanny in Chicago for 40 years, the reclusive Maier was secretly a prolific, self-taught photographer who documented life in the Windy City for decades. But her thousands of stunning pictures were never shown during her lifetime and, in fact, were only discovered after her 2009 death. A selection of Maier’s work is on view in the show “Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows,” 1/10-2/23 at the Cleveland Print Room, 2550 Superior Ave. This BBC documentary complements the exhibition. The screening is sponsored by Herb Ascherman.

Claire Denis' outre 2001 shocker TROUBLE EVERY DAY deserves a second look Claire Denis’ most maligned—and perhaps misunderstood—film has been re-released in a new 35mm color print. TROUBLE EVERY DAY (2001) is a strange, shocking French drama about an American newlywed (Vincent Gallo) and a promiscuous French woman (Béatrice Dalle of Betty Blue) who discover that they share the same all-consuming, twisted sexual hunger. A mysterious medical clinic and radical scientific experiments enhance the movie's creep factor. A few months ago Time Out New York awarded Trouble Every Day five stars (their highest rating), calling it an "inimitable horror film." No one under 18 will be admitted when we show it on Saturday and Sunday.

Pasolini does Sophocles in OEDIPUS REX Pier Paolo Pasolini's rendition of Sophocles’ tragedy OEDIPUS REX (about a man who unknowingly marries his mother) straddles both 20th-century Italy and the ancient world. Franco Citti (Accattone), Silvana Mangano, Alida Valli, and Julian Beck star in this 1967 Italian rarity which boasts stunning cinematography of the Moroccan desert. See it Sunday at 4:00 pm in a new 35mm color print imported from Italy. Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be accepted. Watch a long trailer here.

Chris Marker's 1963 classic LE JOLI MAI shows in new restoration On Friday at 7:30 pm we premiere a new, 50th-anniversary restoration of Chris (La Jetée) Marker's landmark 1963 essay film LE JOLI MAI (THE LOVELY MONTH OF MAY), a snapshot of Paris during the spring of 1962, after the end of the Algerian War. Marker and cameraman Pierre Lhomme cull 55 hours of interviews with Parisians (talking about both their personal lives and politics) into a witty two-and-a-half hour choral city symphony with interstitial narration spoken by Simone Signoret. Michel Legrand did the music. Time Out London calls Le Joli Mai "simultaneously illuminating and funny." Watch the trailer here.
