New doc THE SQUARE looks at recent Egyptian uprising and turmoil The recent political upheavals in Egypt—from Tahrir Square and public elections to the removal of two presidents and recurrent military rule—are made personal in Jehane Noujaim's new documentary THE SQUARE, a galvanizing account of six young activists (a singer-songwriter, a human rights advocate, a Muslim Brotherhood member, et al.) and their very different roles in the revolution. This New York Film Festival selection won the world documentary prize at Sundance and a People’s Choice audience award at the Toronto Int’l Film Festival, and may get an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature on Thursday. Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday or Saturday. Here's the trailer.

Pasolini's GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW is a radical portrait of Jesus THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW is probably the greatest life of Christ ever filmed! Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini turned exclusively to Matthew’s Gospel for his direct, unvarnished portrait of a radical, activist Jesus. He shot his b&w masterpiece in Italy, with a cast of non-professional actors that included his own mother. The movie's magnificent music ranges from Bach to Billie Holiday. Don't miss this 1964 classic (in a new 35mm print from Italy) on Saturday at 5:00 pm. Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored.

Two men bring the Gospel to birds in THE HAWKS AND THE SPARROWS In Pier Paolo Pasolini’s delightful 1966 comic fable THE HAWKS AND THE SPARROWS, a father (celebrated Italian clown Totò), his son (Ninetto Davoli), and a talking crow embark on a picaresque journey to emulate St. Francis of Assisi. They want to bring the Gospel to the birds. Like The Gospel According to St. Matthew (see above blurb), this Italian classic is a singular mix of Christianity and Marxism, with a terrific Ennio Morricone score. See this delightful movie (in a 35mm print imported from Italy) on Sunday at 3:45 pm. Special admission is $12; Cinematheque members $9; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored.

Celebrate MLK Day Eve by watching epic 1970 documentary KING: A FILMED RECORD...MONTGOMERY TO MEMPHIS The life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the momentous events of the Civil Rights movement have largely been reduced to a handful of familiar film clips and sound bites. KING: A FILMED RECORD...MONTGOMERY TO MEMPHIS, on the other hand, is an epic 1970 documentary that paints a sweeping, detailed picture of the years 1955 to 1968 via extensive archival news footage. This 185-min. classic, produced by Ely Landau and newly restored to its long unseen, complete and uncut version, includes complete speeches by Dr. King and stirring testimonials by movie stars of the era (Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, Paul Newman, Burt Lancaster, et al.). See this Oscar-nominated movie that's on the National Film Registry on Sunday at 7:15 pm.

Philadelphia's 1985 war on MOVE is the subject of new doc LET THE FIRE BURN Philadelphia’s war on the radical, African American activist group MOVE—which culminated on 5/13/85 with the city’s bombing of a MOVE-occupied row house, killing 11 and destroying 61 neighboring homes—is recounted in Jason Osder's new documentary LET THE FIRE BURN. Osder uses only newsreels and other archival film clips to construct his spellbinding found-footage assembly. It unfolds like a suspense thriller. See this acclaimed film when we present its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday and Saturday. Watch the trailer here.

Jan Nemec pays tribute to Czech surrealist artist TOYEN
In his 2005 film TOYEN, Czech director Jan Nemec employs a series of hallucinatory visions to pay tribute to the late Czech Surrealist artist Marie Čermínová (known as Toyen) who sheltered a Jewish fellow painter in her Prague apartment during WWII. See this rarity on Sunday at 5:40 pm when it closes our five-film Nemec series. Print this email and present it at the box office and see Toyen for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week. (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)

Phil Skerry presents and discusses Hitchcock's SHADOW OF A DOUBT Dr. Phillip J. Skerry, film scholar and Professor Emeritus at Lakeland Community College, has just published a new book that links physics (!) and the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Dark Energy: Hitchcock’s Absolute Camera and the Physics of Cinematic Spacetime (Bloomsbury, 2013) “applies the theories of dark energy, entropy, black holes, and quantum mechanics to Hitchcock’s technological genius and camera aesthetics” (quoting the book jacket). On Thursday night at 6:45 Dr. Skerry explains some of his ideas as they relate to SHADOW OF A DOUBT, a 1943 thriller that Hitchcock often cited as his best American film. The movie, co-written by Thornton Wilder, follows a young woman as she slowly gleans that her beloved Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) may be the notorious “Merry Widow” murderer. Skerry calls Uncle Charlie a “Prince of Dark Energy” and he will explain why before and after the screening. He will also sell and sign his book.
