French period piece AUGUSTINE looks at 19th-century "female hysteria"
Female “hysteria” is the subject of the lush new French period piece AUGUSTINE, which chronicles the relationship between pioneering real-life 19th-century French neurologist Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (Vincent Lindon) and a partially paralyzed teen patient suffering seizures (French pop singer Soko). Though the doctor hypnotizes and manhandles this youmg woman, and parades her in near-pornographic public demonstrations, this learned, married, repressed man grows attracted to the poor, uninhibited kitchen maid. Chiara Mastroianni and Grégoire Colin co-star in this "dark romance of sex and power" (The NY Times). Don't miss it Friday or Saturday.

Screenwriter succumbs to sexy vampires in bloody, sultry KISS OF THE DAMNED
KISS OF THE DAMNED is an “appealingly affectionate homage to ‘70s baroque horror films” (Time Out New York). Directed by John Cassavetes’ daughter Xan, it’s a sexy, full-bodied vampire picture about a smitten screenwriter who willingly submits to a strawberry blonde bloodsucker, until her even more vampish and voracious sister (Roxane Mesquida) horns in on the relationship. “Saucily thumbing its nose at the insipid teen love of the TWILIGHT franchise, KISS reimagines its bloodsuckers as horny, supercilious Eurotrash with addiction issues…Rapacious lovers of cult cinema will sink their fangs into this.” –Variety. Adults can see this new movie on Thursday in the Mandel Screening Room instide CIA's Joseph McCullough Center, 11610 Euclid Ave. Free parking available in the rear CIA lot, located off of E. 117th St. Enter the building through the rear door. Watch a featurette about the movie here.

Student reports on classmate's home family life in provocative IN THE HOUSE
The New Yorker calls IN THE HOUSE, the clever, playful new film from veteran French helmer François Ozon (SWIMMING POOL, 8 WOMEN), "one of his best.” They’re right. A literature teacher at a French high school finds himself seduced by the written compositions of a precocious student who has insinuated himself into a classmate’s "typical" bourgeois home and begun reporting about what he sees there. The instructor becomes hooked by this ongoing voyeuristic narrative, and pretty soon all kinds of boundaries are being crossed—including the big one between truth and fiction. Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars. See this French movie on Friday or Saturday.

Womanizing musician is straddled with a kid in Oscar-winning Czech film KOLYA
Winner of the 1997 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the funny, charming, and touching Czech drama KOLYA is set in 1980s Soviet bloc Czechoslovakia. A blacklisted, middle-aged womanizer and cellist who has lost his philharmonic gig decides to earn some money by marrying a Russian woman seeking Czech citizenship. But she comes with a five-year-old child, which causes considerable complications. See this modern classic in 35mm on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer.
