Cinematheque premieres Fritz Lang's restored M at the Capitol Theatre
On Thursday night and Sunday morning we present a new 2K digital restoration of Fritz Lang’s great crime film M on the big screen at the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. This 1931 German masterpiece from the director of METROPOLIS tells of a mentally disturbed child murderer (Peter Lorre) who is hunted by both the Berlin police and by the city’s underworld, whose illicit activities are being disrupted by the cops’ extensive, intrusive manhunt. Lang’s first sound film was his favorite of all his movies. Earlier this year Time Out New Yorkawarded the movie five stars (its highest rating), calling it "intense, ominous and controversially humane...Not only the first serial-killer thriller, but the best.” Special admission is $10; Cinematheque members $8; age 25 & under $6. No passes, twofers, or radio winners and no Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts will be honored. Note that the shoreway is scheduled to be closed both days, so find an alternate route to the theatre.

Pierre Étaix series opens with two comedies, LE GRAND AMOUR & Oscar-winning "Happy Anniversary"
Pierre Étaix's LE GRAND AMOUR (THE GREAT LOVE) is a whimsical, delightful 1969 French comedy that wasn’t released in the U.S. until last year. In it, rediscovered comedian Étaix plays a married, middle-aged businessman who falls for his barely legal new secretary and starts fantasizing endlessly about her. The movie is full of sight gags; Étaix’s wife in the film is played by Annie Fratellini, France’s first female circus clown and Mrs. Étaix in real life. See it in a new, restored 35mm color print on Friday or Saturday. It will be preceded at showtime by Étaix’s 15-min. 1962 comedy of errors "Happy Anniversary," which won the 1963 Oscar for Best Live Action Short Subject. Watch a trailer for the Étaix series here.

Alien JD's invade earth in campy, stylish THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X
Paul Bunnell's mad new midnight-movie concoction THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X blends 1950s teensploitation flicks with cheesy sci-fi, and tops it off with wacky musical numbers à la ROCKY HORROR! Former Troma star Will Keenan and Creed Bratton of "The Office" star in this outlandish tale of an alien juvenile delinquent banished to self-destructive planet Earth for punishment. There he interacts with humans and tries to retrieve his stolen, all-powerful “resurrection suit.” Kevin McCarthy (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) and Paul Williams (PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE) co-star in this movie that is reputedly the last film shot on Kodak’s discontinued 35mm Plus X b&w film stock. Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! Here's the fun trailer.

Five-week Buster Keaton series opens with BUSTER KEATON'S TWO-REEL COMEDIES, PROGRAM 1
On Friday and Saturday we show the first four of the 19 hilarious two-reel silent comedies that Buster Keaton starred in and directed before turning his attention to features. (The remaining 15 shorts will show over the next four weeks.) This weekend's program includes: "The High Sign" (1921, pictured above), in which Buster plays a contract killer; the great "One Week" (1920), in which Buster builds a pre-fab house; "Convict 13" (1920), in which Buster escapes Death Row only to be mistaken for a prison guard by other convicts; and "The Scarecrow" (1920) in which Buster competes with his roommate for the hand of a farmer’s daughter. All will be shown in 35mm prints with music tracks. This program is co-presented by MOCA Cleveland, whose exhibition "Kate Gilmore: Body of Work," on view until June 9, features performance-based videos and sculpture by an artist who acknowledges Keaton as an influence. MOCA members $7. A ticket stub from this program can be redeemed for half-price admission to MOCA through June 9.
