Sean Penn plays heavy-metal rock star in road movie THIS MUST BE THE PLACE
Sean Penn, Francis McDormand, and Judd Hirsch star in Paolo Sorrentino's THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, the American-set new movie by the Italian director of IL DIVO. It’s an outlandish, seriocomic drama about a retired, Dublin-based rock star (Penn) who travels across the U.S. to find—and avenge—the elderly ex-Nazi who, decades before, had persecuted the rocker’s late father in Auschwitz. David Byrne, who did the music, also appears. Variety calls the film “quirky, hilarious and moving," adding that "Sorrentino’s first English-lingo production is a road trip of stunning scope yet deep intimacy…Sean Penn [is] at his transformative best.” See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Saturday or Sunday.

Barcelona apartment super spies on and drugs female tenant in scary SLEEP TIGHT
In SLEEP TIGHT, the chilling new Spanish horror film from the co-director of the [REC] and [REC]², a creepy concierge at a splendid Art Nouveau apartment building in Barcelona spends much of his time spying on, harassing, and even drugging and abusing a beautiful female tenant—though she does not know it. Adults can see this wicked thriller on Thursday or Friday in a 35mm color and scope print. Print this email, present it at the box office, and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer.

Poet turns ad man in surreal fable of post-Communist Russia GENERATION P
A poor Russian poet turns powerful advertising man in Victor Ginzburg's new film GENERATION P, an hallucinatory fantasy that captures the chaotic rush to capitalism and consumerism that seized the former Soviet Union in the 1990s after the fall of Communism. Based on Victor Pelevin’s 1999 cult novel, the movie is "wild," "unhinged," and "never boring," according to The Village Voice. See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Friday. Watch the intriguing trailer for a sample of the film's scope and surrealism.

Poisoned man tries to find his murderer in iconic 1950 film noir classic D.O.A.
In Rudolph Maté's gripping and stylish 1950 noir classic D.O.A., a man (Edmond O'Brien) who has been poisoned frantically tries to discover who wants to kill him, and why, before his time runs out. This movie from the cinematographer of Dreyer’s THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC and VAMPYR was selected for the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Don't miss it on Saturday or Sunday.

1991 Japanese animated feature ONLY YESTERDAY opens Studio Ghibli series
ONLY YESTERDAY is a subtle and lyrical 1991 animated feature by Isao Takahata, the co-founder (with Hayao Miyazaki) of Japan's Studio Ghibli. In it, Taeko, a 27-year-old Tokyo office worker poised for a change in her life, takes a trip to her sister’s farm. As she travels and experiences the unfamiliar countryside, Taeko reminisces about the joys and sorrows of her childhood, and wonders whether she been true to the dreams of her youth. The movie opens our series "Studio Ghibli’s Other Anime Masters" on Saturday and Sunday in a 35mm print with English subtitles.
