Sean Penn plays heavy-metal rock star in road movie THIS MUST BE THE PLACE
Sean Penn, Francis McDormand, and Judd Hirsch star in Paolo Sorrentino's THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, the American-set new movie by the Italian director of IL DIVO. It’s an outlandish, seriocomic drama about a retired, Dublin-based rock star (Penn) who travels across the U.S. to find—and avenge—the elderly ex-Nazi who, decades before, had persecuted the rocker’s late father in Auschwitz. David Byrne, who did the music, also appears. Variety calls the film “quirky, hilarious and moving," adding that "Sorrentino’s first English-lingo production is a road trip of stunning scope yet deep intimacy…Sean Penn [is] at his transformative best.” See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Saturday or Sunday.

Poet turns ad man in surreal fable of post-Communist Russia GENERATION P
A poor Russian poet turns powerful advertising man in Victor Ginzburg's new film GENERATION P, an hallucinatory fantasy that captures the chaotic rush to capitalism and consumerism that seized the former Soviet Union in the 1990s after the fall of Communism. Based on Victor Pelevin’s 1999 cult novel, the movie is "wild," "unhinged," and "never boring," according to The Village Voice. See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Friday. Watch the intriguing trailer for a sample of the film's scope and surrealism.
