July 19-24: Children Of Paradise, Monsieur Lazhar, Don Knotts & More!

Cinematheque presents new digital restoration of CHILDREN OF PARADISE at the Cedar Lee and Capitol Theatres! This weekend, for the first time in our 26-year history, the Cinematheque presents a film at the Cedar Lee Theatre! (It will also show on Tues., 7/24 at the Capitol Theatre.) The movie is Marcel Carné's sumptuous 1945 French romantic epic CHILDREN OF PARADISE , which 600 French critics and film professionals voted the greatest French film of all time in a 1995 poll. Made during WWII under the German occupation, this lavish spectacle (written by Jacques Prévert) is set in the teeming theatre district of 1828 Paris. There the serene, mysterious actress and courtesan Garance (Arletty) is loved and wooed by four different men-a mime (Jean-Louis Barrault), an actor (Pierre Brasseur), a thief (Marcel Herrand), and an aristocrat (Louis Salou). Their lives intersect in interesting ways over the film's 3+ hour running time. We will show a glorious new digital restoration of CHILDREN OF PARADISE that is derived from a 4K scan of the film's original camera negative; it possesses a pictorial quality unseen in decades. The movie will show on the big screen at the Cedar Lee Theatre, 2163 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, at 10:00 am on Sunday, 7/22 -- and in one of the upstairs auditoriums (inaccessible to wheelchairs) at the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave., on Tuesday, 7/24 at 7:00 pm. Special admission is $10; Cinematheque members $8; ages 25 & under $6 (with proof of age); no Cinematheque passes, twofers, or radio winners and no Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts. $10 tickets can be purchased in advance at www.clevelandcinemas.com. Metered parking is available behind the Cedar Lee. At the Capitol, free parking is available next to the theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District. Here's the trailer for the re-release. Don Knotts plays Hugh Hefneresque playboy in funny THE LOVE GOD? Don Knotts as a Hugh Hefner-style publisher and playboy? In the late 1960s, anything was possible! The forgotten 1969 comedy THE LOVE GOD? -written and directed by Nat Hiken, the influential creator of TV's "Sergeant Bilko" and "Car 54, Where Are You?"-stars Knotts as the owner and editor of a financially troubled bird-watchers' magazine that becomes a hugely successful girlie magazine after a hostile takeover. The dweeby Knotts suddenly finds himself defending First Amendment rights and living a lifestyle that attracts a different kind of "bird." Adam Sekuler, program director at the Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, calls THE LOVE GOD? the funniest movie ever made! See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Friday. I WISH all movies were as good as this one! I WISH , the latest film from Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda (STILL WALKING, NOBODY KNOWS), is another sensitive tale of children. 12-year-old Koichi lives in the south of Japan with his divorced mother and grandparents. His younger brother Ryunosuke lives in the north with his father. Koichi desperately wishes that his family could be reunited, and when a new bullet train links the two towns, he sees the possibility for a miracle. I WISH has an overall metacritic.com score of 80 (out of 100) and a 91% "fresh" rating on Rotten.Tomatoes, making it one of the best reviewed films of 2012. We wish you would see it on Friday or Saturday. On Saturday night Linda Ehrlich of Case Western Reserve University, a published film scholar who has met and interviewed Hirokazu Kore-eda, will lead a post-film discussion in the student lounge. It's open to all! POST MORTEM is blackly comic look at Chile's 9/11, which took place in 1973 The director (Pablo Larrain) and star (Alfredo Castro) of the haunting 2008 black comedy TONY MANERO return with POST MORTEM , a chilling and ghoulishly comic new tale of Pinochet's Chile. Set during the violent overthrow of President Salvador Allende in 1973, the movie focuses on a gaunt Santiago mortuary worker who becomes infatuated with an erotic dancer next door. When the right-wing authorities target the dancer's left-leaning household, she hides out with our ashen protagonist, who also must deal with a ballooning number of autopsies at work.
