4/17-19: Benicio Del Toro in Jimmy P, Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief & more!
Cinematheque . May 31-6/4: Wings, A Separation, In Darkness & More!
Cinematheque brings silent aerial epic WINGS to the Capitol's big screen On Thursday night the Cinematheque returns to the Capitol Theatre on Cleveland's West Side to present a special screening of the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (and, until THE ARTIST, the only silent film to do so). WINGS (1927) is a super-production about WWI fighter pilots that stars Buddy Rogers, Richard Arlen, "It Girl" Clara Bow, and Gary Cooper. It tells of two American flyboys who love the same woman. The thrilling aerial sequences and spectacular battle scenes are also authentic; director William Wellman spent the First World War as a member of the Lafayette Flying Corps, a group of American pilots who flew for the French. WINGS has been restored by Paramount Pictures for the studio's 100th anniversary. The restoration preserves the movie's original color tinting and also its original music score by legendary silent-film composer John Stepan Zamecnik, who was born in Cleveland in 1872. WINGS will show on the big screen at the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. Regular Cinematheque prices apply but no Cinematheque passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored. Nor will Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts. $9 tickets can be purchased in advance at www.clevelandcinemas.com. Free parking is available next to the theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District. Whimsical father-son movie BOY is highest-grossing New Zealand film of all time Taika Waiti's BOY , the new feature from the director of EAGLE VS SHARK, is the highest grossing Kiwi movie in New Zealand film history. BOY is a whimsical coming-of-age saga set in a rural village in eastern New Zealand in 1984. It focuses on a Michael Jackson-loving, 11-year-old Maori boy who lives with relatives while his dad is in prison. The boy worships his father, and casts him in his fantastic daydreams as a versatile and charismatic hero. But when Dad turns up one day out of the blue, childish imagination gives way to grown-up reality. The film's multi-talented writer-director Taika Waiti plays the father. Catch the exclusive Cleveland premiere of this crowd-pleasing hit on Friday or Saturday. Oscar-winning must-see A SEPARATION concludes Asghar Farhadi series Asghar Farhadi's most recent film A SEPARATION is a masterpiece-and won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in February. An Iranian married couple, already at odds over whether to leave the country and live elsewhere, find their lives further complicated by a parent suffering from Alzheimer's and a sudden court case involving a possible murder. This rich and multifaceted work succeeds as domestic drama, suspense thriller, whodunit, and social critique. It also has great performances. See A SEPARATION in a 35mm color print on Friday or Saturday. Oscar-nominated foreign film BULLHEAD makes belated Cleveland debut One of the five films nominated for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Michael R. Roskam's muscular BULLHEAD tells of a Belgian cattle farmer and his dealings with a shady veterinarian and with thugs in a "growth hormone" mafia. This ambitious, beautifully lensed first feature is at once a crime drama, a character study, and a heroic tragedy. The Los Angeles Times praises it as "an intense, shattering film?A confident and accomplished, punch-in-the-gut debut." On Friday or Saturday you can grab the bull by the horns and see BULLHEAD in a 35mm color & scope print. Another Oscar-nominated foreign film, IN DARKNESS, returns to Cleveland IN DARKNESS , a powerful Holocaust drama from veteran Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland (EUROPA EUROPA), was another one of the five movies nominated for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It tells the true story of a flawed, avaricious Polish worker who risks everything to hide Jews in the sewers of the Nazi-occupied city of Lvov. This impressive, immersive, and moving epic is easily one of the best films of the past year. Entertainment Weekly praised it as "a harrowing nail-biter of a movie" and awarded it a grade of "A-".
