Real and virtual worlds blur in 1973 Fassbinder sci-fi epic WORLD ON A WIRE. The newly restored, newly released Rainer Werner Fassbinder film WORLD ON A WIRE is a two-part, color sci-fi drama made for West German TV in 1973. It follows a scientist at the Institute for Cybernetics and Futurology who transports himself to a supercomputer-created virtual world populated by "identity units" who believe themselves to be human. There he uncovers a vast government/corporate conspiracy. Time Out New York has trumpeted WORLD ON A WIRE as "the discovery of the season!" According to J. Hoberman in The Village Voice it shows "Fassbinder at the height of his powers?Mixes the pop art effrontery of Godard's ALPHAVILLE with the cyber-phobic metaphysics of Kubrick's 2001." See it Thursday or Sunday. Special admission is $12, members & CIA I.D. holders $10, ages 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Watch the trailer here. Mexican erotic drama LEAP YEAR chronicles sadomasochistic relationship Michael Rowe's sexually explicit Mexican drama LEAP YEAR won the Camera d'Or for "best first film" at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. It follows Laura, an intensely lonely woman who is both delusional and self-destructive. Though she works as a freelance journalist, her main occupation is a series of one-night stands. These eventually lead to a sadomasochistic relationship with a brooding aspiring actor. What does she derive from being used and humiliated? No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that premieres on Friday and Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see LEAP YEAR for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member); it's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer. Bresson's 1951 masterpiece DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST returns in new print An internal spiritual struggle is visualized in Robert Bresson's 1951 French classic DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST , a remarkable tale of a young rural priest, at odds with his parishioners and dying of cancer, who finds grace through suffering. It's based on Georges Bernanos' novel. Roger Ebert calls it "one of the two greatest Catholic films." To legendary film critic Pauline Kael, it was "one of the most profound emotional experiences in the history of film." François Truffaut regarded it as "Bresson's best film?Every shot is as true as a handful of earth." See it in a new 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands star in Cassavetes' rarely shown LOVE STREAMS In John Cassavetes' 1984 drama LOVE STREAMS, Cassavetes and his wife Gena Rowlands play a middle-aged brother and sister who, despite his boozy womanizing and her loosening grip on reality, cling to each other when the rest of their family forsakes them. This funny, touching, emotionally messy film-one of the director's best-has never been released on mass-market DVD. And the out-of-print VHS version is shorn of 19 minutes! LOVE STREAMS is one of critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's "top 100" movies, and you can see it Saturday or Sunday. Here's the trailer. Rosenbaum appears in person on Monday, October 3 (see next blurb). Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum presents 1990 surrealist film WARSAW BRIDGE Jonathan Rosenbaum, one of America's great film critics, comes to the Cinematheque on Monday to introduce and discuss a favorite film, WARSAW BRIDGE , an idiosyncratic 1990 feature by 81-year-old Catalan surrealist Pere Portabella, a former associate of Luis Buñuel. Though now two decades old, the film was released in America only a few years ago; in 2008 we premiered it in Cleveland, calling it an "elegantly-shot enigma that replaces a conventional plot with cryptic vignettes, classical music, naked women, ideas about art and commerce, and views of Barcelona." Viewers loved it. Rosenbaum describes the movie this way: "Catalan underground filmmaker Pere Portabella's opulent post-Franco color film threads its own dazzling anthology of attractions (including operas, concerts, a lecture, a novel, a swank party, a forest fire, and sex) into something resembling (though never quite arriving at) a single narrative. It's one of his most exciting films to date." Jonathan Rosenbaum appears courtesy of the Speakers Committee of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at CWRU; special thanks to Linda Ehrlich. Admission $7 with CWRU I.D. Moving image magician Bruce McClure makes his Cleveland debut tonight (9/27) Two different live shows Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Are We Fairly Represented? 7pm This Does Not Accord With My Experience 8:30pm Each program $9 Cinematheque members, CIA ID holders $7 Ages 25 + under $5 Alpert Award winner Bruce McClure is a Brooklyn, New York moving-image magician who forges stunning works of light and sound from a motley assortment of specially-modified 16mm projectors, film loops, transformers, and guitar effects pedals. McClure runs film loops of alternating black and clear frames (and some representational footage) through multiple modified projectors that he manipulates by hand. By adding color gels, metal plates in the projector's shoe assembly, guitar effects pedals, a mixer, and loudspeakers, he constructs an immersive environment of pulsating light formations that throb and flicker to a minimalist percussive beat. Don't miss the first Cleveland appearance by this internationally acclaimed multimedia performance artist!
