June 16-18 Film Schedule: Uncle Boonmee, Billion Dollar Brain, Strongman & More!

Funny, sad, all-too-human STRONGMAN profiles real-life "Incredible Hulk" Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2009 Slamdance Film Festival, STRONGMAN is an alternately hilarious and heartbreaking portrait of Stanley "Stanless Steel" Pleskun, a New Jersey scrap-metal dealer who is one of the strongest men in the world when it comes to lifting and bending steel and metal. Though this incredible hulk gets gigs at birthday parties and trade shows, he dreams of fame and a showbiz career. But time is running out and, as he wryly notes, "You can't bend people." A cinema-verité tour de force, this amazing movie was shot over nine years by filmmaker Zachary Levy. We first heard about it from filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (MAN PUSH CART, CHOP SHOP, GOODBYE SOLO) when he attended the 2009 Cleveland Int'l Film Festival. Bahrani told us it was the best movie he'd seen in a long time. This Friday and Saturday you can see it too. KORKORO is Gypsy Holocaust drama KORKORO , the latest film on Gypsy life and culture from Tony Gatlif (LATCHO DROM), won the top prize at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival , as well as the audience award for most popular film. The movie follows a nomadic Roma family during the French Occupation of WWII. Forbidden from wandering by a newly-imposed French law, the Gypsies hide out in a rural village and try to avoid capture and imprisonment by the Nazis. "Korkoro" is Romani for "freedom." Watch the trailer and then catch the whole movie in a 35mm color & scope print on Friday or Saturday. Right-wing nut organizes invasion of USSR in Cold War thriller BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN Ken Russell's 1967 British thriller BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN was the third film starring Michael Caine as Len Deighton's secret agent Harry Palmer (the first was THE IPCRESS FILE). It was also the final movie for Catherine Deneuve's older sister Françoise Dorléac, who died during production. Set largely in Finland, the film finds Palmer trying to thwart an invasion of the Soviet Union by a private army. The incursion was engineered by a mad, right-wing, Texas oil tycoon (Ed Begley) and a supercomputer as nefarious as HAL. Karl Malden and Oscar Homolka co-star. See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Saturday. Here's the original trailer (in the wrong aspect ratio). UNCLE BOONMEE, top prize winner at Cannes 2010, is spirit-filled reverie UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES , the latest movie by master Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (TROPICAL MALADY, SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY), is another of his tender, poetic, supernatural, surreal, semi-autobiographical reveries. It was also one of the most acclaimed foreign-language films of 2010, winning the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Set at a remote outpost in the Thai countryside, the film tells of a dying man who communes with his dead wife, a lost son who returns in non-human form, and other apparitions and phantoms from his memory and/or previous lives. The Onion A.V. Club calls it "a moving, gently reassuring tale that softens the boundaries between humanity and nature, life and the afterlife." UNCLE BOONMEE makes its Cleveland debut in 35mm on Thursday and Friday. Print this postl and present it at the box office and see UNCLE BOONMEE for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) New schedules available this weekend!
