1956 doc ON THE BOWERY shows that homelessness, joblessness are nothing new Lionel Rogosin was the scion of a wealthy industrial family who became "probably the greatest documentary filmmaker of all time," according to John Cassavetes. ON THE BOWERY, his breakthrough 1956 work, is a fascinating portrait of a lost New York. Shot inside the bars, flophouses, and missions of Skid Row, the movie compassionately profiles the depressed denizens of this derelict district. Despite international acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature, the movie was attacked on its initial release by The New York Times' powerful film critic Bosley Crowther. It is now on the National Film Registry. Drink in a beautiful, new, fully-restored 35mm print of this classic on Friday or Saturday. Read more about this major rediscovered film here . Thrilling Hong Kong martial arts flicks IP MAN & IP MAN 2 show back to back! Wilson Yip's 2008 film IP MAN is a biographical kung-fu action film that dramatizes the early life of the titular legendary grandmaster who is also known as Yip Man. Ip (1893-1972) was the first person to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun, and he mentored Bruce Lee among others. In this movie, which won the 2009 Hong Kong Film Award for best picture, he is seen inspiring and instructing his Chinese countrymen after Japan's 1937 invasion of their country. Donnie Yen stars; Sammo Hung did the fight choreography. Here's the trailer. See below the sequel IP MAN 2. IP MAN 2: LEGEND OF THE GRANDMASTER is Wilson Yip's 2010 sequel to IP MAN (see above). It picks up the life of the celebrated martial arts instructor in 1950s Hong Kong, where his desire to teach Wing Chun is challenged by other local practitioners and also by the British authorities. Once again Donnie Yen stars and Sammo Hung did the choreography. (He also appears in this movie.) See both IP MAN films on Thursday or Sunday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see IP MAN 2 for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member, or if you see the original IP MAN on the same night). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) ENTER THE VOID on Saturday; I.D. required Back by popular demand is the director's cut of Gaspar Noé's hallucinatory 2009 film ENTER THE VOID , which at 160 minutes is 20 minutes longer than the version shown at the Cedar Lee last December. This groundbreaking work finds the visionary director of I STAND ALONE and IRREVERSIBLE venturing into the neon-lit club district of modern Tokyo, which pulsates with strobe lights, electronic music, and fluorescent colors. This garish neighborhood is the haunting ground for a recently-deceased drug dealer, who floats through space, traverses time, and enters objects and people in order to watch over his stripper sister (Paz de la Huerta). Noé's endlessly tracking camera approximates astral projection, and the result is one of the greatest psychedelic head trips since Kubrick's 2001. No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that shows on Saturday only! MODERN TIMES: Chaplin sings; you'll roar! Charlie Chaplin's 1936 masterpiece MODERN TIMES is one of the funniest comedies ever made! (It was also one of the first 25 movies selected for the National Film Registry.) In it, Chaplin's "little tramp" battles mind-numbing automation as a factory worker on an assembly line. MODERN TIMES is essentially a silent movie with music and sound effects, but it does include a scene in which the 1930s audience heard Chaplin's voice for the first time; he sings a gibberish song. Paulette Goddard co-stars. See this great classic in a new 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. Kids 12 & under pay only $6.
