Locally-shot 1968 movie DOUBLE-STOP receives first screening in over 40 years Roger and Gerald Sindell's DOUBLE-STOP is a nearly-forgotten 1968 feature film that was shot in Cleveland at the height of the city's racial tensions during the late 1960s. Written and directed by two twentysomething brothers who graduated from Shaker Heights High School, the movie is an earnest plea for harmony and tolerance. The film tells of a cellist in the Cleveland Orchestra (Jeremiah Sullivan) and his wife (Mimi Torchin) who choose to let their son (Billy Kurtz) participate in the busing program that was intended to integrate the Cleveland schools. But when the cellist sees a schoolyard reality that's much rougher than he had imagined, he impulsively pulls his kid out of school, against the wishes of his more doctrinaire-liberal spouse. Never released on video or DVD and unseen for decades, DOUBLE-STOP was shot on 35mm film by a Hollywood crew on locations in Shaker Heights, Bratenahl, and University Circle-including Severance Hall, where the Cleveland Orchestra was hired for two days of shooting. The movie won the Atlanta Film Festival's Silver Phoenix award for "World's Best Feature Motion Picture" and was shown at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the New Directors series. Gerald Sindell, after a Hollywood career in which he directed three other features, is now an author, publisher, and business consultant based near San Francisco. He and stars Billy (now Bill) Kurtz and Patti Fairchild (mother of Fox 8's Stefani Schaefer) will attend Sunday's 2:30 pm screening and will answer audience questions after the movie, shedding light on the challenges of making an independent film outside Hollywood back in the days when this was rarely done. HADEWIJCH is latest tale of the spirit and the modern world from HUMANITE director Bruno Dumont's gorgeous, lyrical, austere, and ambiguous new film HADEWIJCH finds the neo-Bressonian director of HUMANITE and THE LIFE OF JESUS once again straddling the realms of the sacred and the profane. A novice nun, Hadewijch (named after a 13th-century Christian poet and mystic living in and around Flanders), is kicked out of the convent for her too-extreme devotion to God. She returns to her previous life in Paris, where she is Celine, daughter of a wealthy government minister. But she does not renounce her fanatical blind faith, and it leads her down a dangerous new path. Is she imbued with madness, grace, or both? Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney are TWO FOR THE ROAD in charming 1967 love story In Stanley Donen's 1967 British love story TWO FOR THE ROAD , Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn play an unfulfilled husband and wife who look back over 12 years of marriage while traveling by car in the south of France. This road movie from the director of CHARADE and FUNNY FACE features a lovely Henry Mancini score and a scrambled time structure that was revolutionary in its day. "Best Undistributed Film" TO DIE LIKE A MAN finally comes to Cleveland João Pedro Rodrigues' 2009 French/Portuguese co-production TO DIE LIKE A MAN was voted "top undistributed film of 2009" in The Village Voice Film Poll and finished #2 on Indiewire's list of Best Undistributed Films. Finally it can be seen in America! The third feature from the fast-rising Portuguese auteur of O FANTASMA and TWO DRIFTERS (both shown previously at the Cinematheque) follows an aging transvestite as she tries to maintain her star status (amid stiff younger competition) in Lisbon's changing drag-show scene. A 2009 New York Film Festival selection, it was Portugal's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Adults can catch it Thursday or Friday. Man contemplates selling his soul to demons in Brit horror movie HEARTLESS Our post-Valentine's Day presentation HEARTLESS is a British horror film about a photographer with a heart-shaped birthmark on his face (Jim Sturgess of 21 and ACROSS THE UNIVERSE) who discovers that there are demons in East London. This is the first film in 14 years by the cult director Philip Ridley (THE REFLECTING SKIN). Watch the trailer, then see the whole thriller this Thursday or Saturday.
