9/18-21: Polyester, Ivory Tower, Policeman & more!
Cinematheque . 12/9-11: My Dog Tulip, The Awful Truth, Tati's Traffic And More!
Dog is man's best (and only) friend in touching animated tale MY DOG TULIP Christopher Plummer, Isabella Rossellini, and the late Lynn Redgrave provide the main character voices in Paul and Sandra Fierlinger's MY DOG TULIP, a delightful, crowd-pleasing, hand-drawn new animated feature for adults. Based on a celebrated 1956 memoir by late British writer J.R. Ackerley, the film details Ackerley's devotion to (and fascination with) his pet German shepherd, who lived with him for 15 years. Ackerley, a lovelorn gay man, once wrote that his dog "offered me what I had never found in my sexual life: constant, single-hearted, incorruptible, uncritical devotion." The NY Times has called MY DOG TULIP "one of the most sophisticated dog movies ever made." The Village Voice goes further, saying it "transform(s) the seemingly banal relationship between pet and owner into something singular, inimitable, sacred." Don't miss it Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Cary Grant stars in the awfully funny screwball comedy THE AWFUL TRUTH Cary Grant and Irene Dunne star in Leo (DUCK SOUP) McCarey's 1937 screwball comedy classic THE AWFUL TRUTH , showing Friday and Saturday in a 35mm studio archive print from Sony Pictures. The movie tells of a soon-to-be-divorced couple who each try to thwart the other's budding romance with another person. The dependably dull romancer Ralph Bellamy co-stars in this film that placed #68 on the American Film Institute's 2000 list of the 100 best American screen comedies. THE ISLAND is Russian spiritual drama for fans of Tarkovsky & Dostoyevsky Never released theatrically in America, THE ISLAND is a 2006 Russian film by Pavel Lungin (Lounguine), director of TAXI BLUES and TYCOON: A NEW RUSSIAN. Winner of the Russian equivalent of the Golden Globes and the Oscars for best picture, director, and actor in 2007, the movie, which is set on a remote island in North Russia, tells of a mysterious Orthodox monk who possesses the gifts of clairvoyance and healing, yet repents constantly for a past sin. THE ISLAND ranks #33 on Image's 2010 Arts & Faith Top 100 Films list . See it in a 35mm color & scope print this Thursday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and see the movie for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! Mr. Hulot rides into the sunset on congested roadways in 1971 comedy TRAFFIC Jacques Tati makes his final screen appearance as his beloved alter-ego Mr. Hulot in TRAFFIC , a 1971 comedy that we will show in a 35mm print from France on Friday night. En route to a Dutch car show in a gadget-filled vehicle, Hulot observes the exasperating, often absurd world of automobiles and their drivers. (And this is in the days before cell phones!) Only Tati would have made this funny, unique, poetic satire. Kids 12 & under will be admitted to this G-rated movie for only $6.
