9/2-5: Ondine, Lourdes, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes And More!

Colin Farrell falls for mysterious, maybe mythological woman in Irish fantasy ONDINE Colin Farrell and Stephen Rea star in ONDINE, the magical new film by Ireland's Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME). The movie is a fantasy about an Irish fisherman who captures a beautiful and mysterious woman in his net one day; his wheelchair-bound daughter believes her to be a selkie, a mythic seal that can take human form. The Christian Science Monitor calls ONDINE "blarney carried to rhapsodic heights." Catch it Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Move over, Austin Powers; OSS 117 - LOST IN RIO is latest funny James Bond spoof Michel Hazanavicius's 2009 French film OSS 117 - LOST IN RIO is an "uproariously funny" (Boxoffice) follow-up to 2006's OSS 117: CAIRO - NEST OF SPIES. This time the titular French secret agent travels to Brazil to look for a microfilm containing the names of France's WWII-era Nazi collaborators. (The year is 1967.) This wry, knowing spoof of sixties spy movies (and French suavity and sophistication) overflows with clever references to classic movies. Catch it Friday or Saturday in a 35mm color & scope print. Print this email and present it at the box office and see OSS 117 - LOST IN RIO for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out.) GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES; film buffs prefer fully-restored 35mm prints Howard Hawks' 1953 comedy musical GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell as two shapely singers and gold-diggers who must contend with all manner of men on a transatlantic ocean crossing. Marilyn's rendition of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" is an iconic screen moment. Don't miss this beloved classic -- which was #6 on Rainer Werner Fassbinder's list of his 10 favorite films -- in a new, fully-restored 35mm color print this Saturday or Sunday. Terrific LOURDES is a miracle of a movie The best film we saw at this year's Cleveland Int'l Film Festival returns for one more screening! Jessica Hausner's 2009 Austrian drama LOURDES stars the amazing Sylvie Testud as a paraplegic with MS who makes a pilgrimage to the famous French Catholic shrine. (It's one of the few excursions available to people in wheelchairs.) There she and her fellow pilgrims navigate crowds and negotiate each others' foibles to seek blessing, healing, love, perhaps even a miracle. But do they find them? Admission is free to latest annual showcase of CIA student video work, .E.M.I.T 2010 .E.M.I.T 2010 is the latest annual showcase of film, video, and animation made by Cleveland Institute of Art students. The innovative and original short films in this program will delight, amaze, and impress. See it Thursday night at 8 pm, right after the opening of the annual CIA faculty exhibition (6-8 pm in CIA's Reinberger Galleries). Admission to both events is free! Hear John Ewing on Wed. Around Noon; METROPOLIS advance tix now on sale Cinematheque Director John Ewing was supposed to be on WCPN's daily arts show "Around Noon" on Monday. But he was bumped by an interview with the new director of The Cleveland Museum of Art. So now Ewing will be on the Wednesday, September 1 show, around 12:45 pm. Tune in to WCPN 90.3 to hear him. Advance tickets to the Cinematheque's September 23 Alloy Orchestra/COMPLETE METROPOLIS special event at the Capitol Theatre are now on sale. Cinematheque members can buy advance tickets only at the Cinematheque box office. Non-members can buy tickets at the box office or online at Advance tickets cost $19, Cinematheque members $15. Day of show tickets will be $22, members $18. This is certainly one of the must-see film events of the fall; those who wait may be disappointed!
