WOMEN WITHOUT MEN is first feature by video artist/photographer Shirin Neshat WOMEN WITHOUT MEN, the first film directed by celebrated Iranian-born photographer and video artist Shirin Neshat, is a beautifully photographed feminist allegory set in 1953 Iran, shortly before the American-backed coup that strengthened the Shah's control of the country. It's a magical realist work that chronicles the interrelationships of four Iranian women oppressed by men-from a prostitute, to a sequestered sister, to a middle-aged wife in a loveless, sexless marriage. See it Friday or Saturday. Father doesn't necessarily know best in acclaimed DADDY LONGLEGS Brooklyn filmmaking brothers Benny and Josh Safdie take a look back at their own childhood and their relationship with an erratic father in DADDY LONGLEGS , one of the most acclaimed American movies of the year. Fellow NYC filmmaker Ronald (FROWNLAND) Bronstein, who was a Cinematheque guest in 2008, plays Lenny, a graying, 34-year-old father of two boys aged 7 and 9 (played by Sage and Frey Ranaldo, sons of Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo). Lenny gets custody of his sons for two weeks every year, but because he himself is nothing but an overgrown, irresponsible kid with a volatile temper, those 14 days are an emotional roller coaster ride fraught with both fun and peril. Lenny's the worst-and the best-dad in the world. Watch the trailer and then see the whole film on Saturday or Sunday. Osama bin Laden's bodyguard interviewed at length in THE OATH A taxi driver in Yemen who was once Osama bin Laden's bodyguard (and whose brother-in-law in Guantanamo was bin Laden's driver) is interviewed at length in THE OATH , Laura Poitras' superb documentary that offers a sobering new perspective on the War on Terror. The film has music by Osvaldo Golijov, sung by Dawn Upshaw. New York magazine calls THE OATH "the most revelatory and essential documentary of 2010" and you can see it for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member) by printing this post and presenting it at the box office on Thursday or Friday. It's our Deal of the Week. (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) [REC] 2 will make you a nervous wreck This sequel to one of the scariest movies of recent years, [REC] (as in "record button" on a camcorder), picks up where the original left off -- not surprising since it was made by the same directors. In [REC] 2 , showing Thursday and Sunday, a TV news crew remains trapped inside a Barcelona apartment building where a mysterious virus is turning humans into flesh-craving zombies. A SWAT team and a mysterious government official enter the quarantined building to look for them, and also to try to understand and contain the contagion before it spreads to the outside world. If you saw the original Spanish thriller when we showed it at the Capitol Theatre on August 12, we know you'll be back for this one. But if you didn't seen the first movie, don't hesitate to pick up the story at this point. You'll be a basket case by the time it's over. Adults only! TOPKAPI is colorful, classic caper comedy Jules Dassin's delightful 1964 heist movie TOPKAPI -shot in exotic, picturesque Istanbul with an international all-star cast (Melina Mercouri, Maximilian Schell, Robert Morley, Peter Ustinov, who won the Oscar)-is essentially a frothier, funnier, color version of Dassin's most celebrated film, the straight-faced 1955 French caper movie RIFIFI. Here it's a female jewel thief who recruits a motley band of scoundrels to help her lift an emerald-encrusted scabbard from a Turkish museum. Watch the original theatrical trailer and then take (in) the whole movie on Saturday or Sunday. Hear John Ewing on "Around Noon" Cinematheque Director John Ewing will be an in-studio guest on next Monday's "Around Noon" show, which airs between 12:10 pm and 1:00 pm on WCPN 90.3 FM. John will discuss films coming to the Cinematheque and The Cleveland Museum of Art during September and October.
