6/10-12: Birdemic, Neil Young Trunk Show & More!

NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW is part two of Jonathan Demme's proposed Young trilogy NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW is Jonathan Demme's follow-up to his elegiac 2006 concert film "Neil Young: Heart of Gold." Here he captures the singer-songwriter as rocker. Shooting during Young's 2007 "Chrome Dreams II" tour, Demme captures the living legend in both acoustic and electronic modes as he performs "No Hidden Path," "Cinnamon Girl," "Kansas," "Mexico," and others. The movie, which shows Friday and Saturday, has a very high metacrtic.com rating of 83 (out of 100) . Print this email and present it at the box office and see "Neil Young Trunk Show" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! Scrawny sadsack John of God returns in Monteiro's GOD'S COMEDY The 1995 Portuguese film GOD'S COMEDY is the second part of João César Monteiro's "João de Deus (John of God) Trilogy" (The first part, "Recollections of the Yellow House," showed last weekend, but if you didn't see it, don't worry about it. Each of the three films stands alone as a self-contained work.) Once again Monteiro himself plays João, a cadaverous everyman (imagine Murnau's Nosferatu) who, in this movie, is the proprietor of the "Paradise Ice Cream Parlor," where he guards the secret recipe for his heavenly house specialties and flirts with the beautiful teenage girls who work there. Deliberately paced and dryly comic, this painterly meditation on prurience and purity is "one of the most flagrantly perverse films you're ever likely to see," according to Peter Scarlet of the San Francisico International Film Festival. Here's the original unsubtitled trailer , which might intrigue you to find out what it all means this Thursday or Saturday. Special admission is $12, Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. And in case you didn't hear, we're extending our Monteiro series by one week and showing his 1982 masterpiece "Silvestre" on July 1 and 2. BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR lowers the bar for hilariously bad movies The theatre that first brought Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" to Cleveland now brings you the next bad-movie sensation! BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR has been acclaimed by The NY Times as "a high-flying cult hit" http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/25/movies/25birdemic.html and is already a late-night staple in Austin, L.A., and Phoenix. This hilarious movie focuses on a software salesman and his fashion-model girlfriend who witness a mass of crudely animated clip-art vultures and eagles launch an inexplicable air attack on northern California. This sincere but inept homage to Alfred Hitchcock is the work of a Vietnamese-born California software salesman who taught himself filmmaking-and not very well. Watch the trailer and then catch the whole film on Friday or Saturday.
