10/29-11/2: Hitchcock, Fellini, Allen & More!

Phil Skerry introduces Hitchcock's rarely-revived THE WRONG MAN In THE WRONG MAN, musician Henry Fonda is fingered for a crime he did not commit. Alfred Hitchcock's 1957 thriller is the most explicit statement of one of his major themes -- that of "the wrong man." Made right before "Vertigo," it is also the least-revived major film from the director's greatest era. Based on a true story, it was shot in a semi-documentary style unique in Hitchcock's career. Watch the original theatrical trailer (narrated by Hitchcock himself) and then see the film in a 35mm print this Thursday or Saturday night. Come on Thursday and hear Hitchcock expert Phil Skerry introduce the film. Phil, whose last name is pronounced "scary" (as in Halloween), is Professor Emeritus of English and Film at Lakeland Community College and author of the recent book "Psycho in the Shower," copies of which he will sell and sign on Thursday night. You will also be able to hear Phil on Around Noon on WCPN 90.3 FM sometime between noon and 1 pm on Thursday. See below for another Hitchcock classic. And there's more finger-pointing in Hitchcock's I CONFESS Montgomery Clift plays a priest collared for a murder he did not commit, and conflicted because he knows who the real killer is (via a confession he heard), in Hitchcock's I CONFESS. This 1953 "wrong man" drama, another of the rarely-revived movies from Hitchcock's greatest decade, shows in a 35mm print this Thursday and Saturday night. Hitchcock expert Dr. Philip J. Skerry (see previous blurb) will introduce the movie on Thursday only. Don't forget that non-members who see both Hitchcock movies on the same night will save $2! If you're interested. Richard Fleischer's 10 RILLINGTON PLACE: a forgotten 1971 chiller not on DVD Richard Attenborough plays one of Britain's most notorious serial killers in the creepy crime drama 10 RILLINGTON PLACE. Largely forgotten and unavailable on DVD in the U.S., this 1971 movie has been recently restored and re-released, and some are hailing it as a lost masterpiece. (In June Time Out New York gave the film five stars, their highest rating.) Director Richard Fleischer, who appeared in person at the Cinematheque in 2000 with his 1954 classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," filmed the movie in the same row houses where the murders occurred in the 1940s. Watch a short TV trailer and then catch the whole film in a 35mm studio archive print this Friday or Saturday night. Woody Allen series concludes with 1985 masterpiece THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO A matinee idol (Jeff Daniels) walks off the screen and into the sad, lonely life of a mousy Depression-era housewife and movie buff (Mia Farrow) in Woody Allen's brilliantly inventive (and profoundly moving) tragicomedy THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO. If you've never seen this movie in which fiction confronts reality, b&w battles color, and an actor wrestles with his character, then don't miss it Friday or Sunday. As an added inducement to attend, print this post and present it at the box office and see "The Purple Rose of Cairo" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out.) CASANOVA is the first of "Nine by Fellini" We open our nine-film Federico Fellini retrospective (which continues through December 13) with one of the Italian maestro's most opulent films, FELLINI'S CASANOVA , unavailable on DVD in the U.S. Donald Sutherland plays the legendary lothario in this fantastic reimagining of his kinky life, replete with Oscar-winning costumes and a great Nino Rota score.See the whole movie, in a 35mm color print from the Universal Pictures studio archive, this coming Sunday or Monday night. The film is in English and is for adults only. "Nine by Fellini" is sponsored by Cleveland's Fellini-inspired restaurants -- La Dolce Vita at 12112 Mayfied Road at the corner of Murray Hill in Little Italy, and La Strada at 2050 East Fourth Street downtown -- and by Campari. Filmmaker David Wain to appear at screenwriting workshop at CIA on Nov. 23 Filmmaker (and Shaker Heights native) David Wain, director of the hit comedies "Role Models" and "Wet Hot American Summer," will appear in person to lead a session as part of "Screenwriting 101," a day-long workshop offered on Monday, November 23 at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Presented by CINEMA Cleveland (a non-profit dedicated to aiding and supporting local filmmakers and artists) in association with the CIA, this crash course in successful screenwriting will be led by Michael Ferrari, screenwriting and film instructor at CSU and Oberlin College. Course fee is $75 per person, but only $25 for Cinematheque members and CIA students. (Fee includes lunch and a complimentary copy of the screenwriting software Celtx.)
