7/31-8/2: Looney Tunes finale, The Double, Brasslands & more!

Two Jesse Eisenbergs are better than one in startling, surreal THE DOUBLE Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska star in THE DOUBLE, the acclaimed new film by British comic actor and director Richard Ayoade, whose previous (and first) theatrical feature, Submarine, was one of the highlights of 2010. Based on a Dostoyevsky novella, The Double tells of a mousy office clerk, Simon James, who is startled to discover that his new co-worker, James Simon, looks exactly like him, but is as confident, charismatic, and popular as Simon is shy, timid, and lonely. The New York Post notes that "Richard Ayoade's breathtakingly realized oddity will appeal to fans of David Lynch and the comic surrealism of Terry Gilliam's Brazil.” On Thursday or Friday catch the exclusive Cleveland premiere of this film that has an 83% "fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes. Print this email and present it at the box office and see The Double for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the film's terrific trailer.

BRASSLANDS captures world's largest trumpet festival, held annually in Serbia The raucous new music documentary BRASSLANDS centers on the small Serbian village of Guča, home of the world's largest trumpet festival and competition. Among the 50,000 musicians and music fans descending upon the town for the 50th annual event are a Serbian brass band defending its title, a talented group of Roma Gypsies, and, for the first time ever, an upstart American band from NYC. How will Americans be received in a country that was bombed by the U.S. not that long ago? See the exclusive Cleveland premiere of this movie on Friday or Saturday. Watch the trailer here. See next blurb for another new movie focusing on Gypsies.

New doc A PEOPLE UNCOUNTED recounts little-known modern history of the Roma The Roma people (Gypsies) comprise Europe's largest minority. The Nazis targeted them for extermination (along with the Jews) during Hitler's "Final Solution." Yet, 70 years after the end of WWII, this diasporic ethnic group still faces prejudice, institutionalized discrimination, and ethnic hatred from nationalists and resurgent white supremacists. The acclaimed new documentary A PEOPLE UNCOUNTED: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE ROMA profiles the Roma’s current—and historic—plight. The Village Voice calls it "profoundly unsettling and deeply moving." Watch it Friday or Saturday. Click here to listen to a 5/20/14 NPR story about the movie.

Looney Tunes series concludes with cartoons featuring the Roadrunner et al. 12 classic Warner Bros cartoons, four with Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, constitute our LOONEY TUNES, PROGRAM 5, which concludes our series "Still Looney After All These Years." Included: Chuck Jones’ The Wearing of the Grin (1951), Ready..Set..Zoom! (1955), Heaven Scent (1956), Zoom and Bored (1957), Whoa, Be-Gone! (1958), and Fastest with the Mostest (1960); Robert McKimson’s A Fractured Leghorn (1950), Rabbit’s Kin (1952), and Little Boy Boo (1954); and Friz Freleng’s Big House Bunny (1950), Bunker Hill Bunny (1950), and Greedy for Tweety (1957). Catch them all (if you can) on Thursday or Saturday.

April Wright, director of new doc on drive-in theatres, to appear in person on Aug. 8 Filmmaker April Wright will attend our August 8 showing of her new documentary GOING ATTRACTIONS: THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF THE AMERICAN DRIVE-IN MOVIE. The film is one of five special movies showing as part of the Cinematheque's 28th Anniversary Weekend! Read more about April and her movie here.
