Britannia wit rules in adverts seen in 2013 BRITISH ARROWS AWARD WINNERS
If the commercials are what get you to watch that big football game in early February, then it’s Super Bowl Weekend at the Cinematheque! The British Arrows Awards (formerly the British Television Advertising Awards) honor the best, the wittiest, and the most innovative ads produced in the UK for television, cinemas, and the internet during the preceding year. This annual compilation of British Arrows prize winners is always hugely entertaining—just ask the thousands of people who watch it every holiday season at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where it’s now a 27-year tradition! The 2013 BRITISH ARROWS AWARD WINNERS, showing Friday and Sunday, features a major movie star who get slapped repeatedly for art’s sake; a demonstration of how the Three Little Pigs precipitated the mortgage crisis; amazing feats of Olympic and Paralympic athletes; and much more! These funny, touching, well-acted, well-produced ads play more like short films than mere commercials.
Klaus Kinski is creepy Dracula in Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE
Klaus Kinski and Isabelle Adjani star in Werner Herzog’s NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE, an eerie, poetic 1979 update of F.W. Murnau’s silent vampire classic. Herzog's remake adds color and sound (and 11,000 live rats—no CGI here) to the 1922 original, an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Shot simultaneously in two languages (English and German), Nosferatu the Vampyre will be shown in 35mm on Thursday and Friday in its little-known subtitled version. When the movie was revived in New York in 2013, Time Out awarded it five stars (the magazine's highest rating), calling it "a pinnacle of horror cinema…atmospheric, rhapsodic and achingly transcendent." Print this email and present it at the box office and see this classic for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
Gabriel Byrne, Emmanuelle Devos star in contempo "Brief Encounter," JUST A SIGH
Gabriel Byrne and Emmanuelle Devos play strangers (he’s an Irish professor; she’s a French actress) who meet on a train bound for Paris in the new French romance JUST A SIGH. This contemporary Brief Encounter is set on the first day of summer. The L.A. Times calls it "a bracingly romantic drama that's alive with a mature sense of passion and mystery.” Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Thursday or Saturday.
Beth B's EXPOSED surveys current burlesque revival; see live performers on stage after Friday's showing! Beth B's new film Exposed surveys the cutting-edge performers and artists who have recently reclaimed the once-disreputable art form of burlesque—and pushed it into bold new realms of satire, parody, and even empowerment. The movie features interviews with—and performances by—such groundbreaking underground luminaries as Bambi the Mermaid, Bunny Love, Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, Mat Fraser, Rose Wood, Tigger, and World Famous *Bob*. According to The L.A. Times, the film's subjects "bare their souls as much as their bodies." No one under 18 will be admitted when we show the film on Friday and Saturday. After Friday's show, artists from Bella Sin's Le Femme Mystique burlesque troupe will perform on the Cinematheque stage!
