Riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna profiled in new documentary THE PUNK SINGER
Kathleen Hanna, the outspoken activist, musician, and cultural icon who was lead singer for the punk bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre and spokesperson for the "riot grrrl" movement of the 1990s, is the subject of THE PUNK SINGER. See this new documentary, which is full of archival footage and new interviews with Hanna herself, on Friday or Saturday when it makes its East Side Cleveland premiere. Here's the trailer.
Joan Crawford stars in Nicholas Ray's crazy 1954 cult Western JOHNNY GUITAR
Nicholas Ray's crazy, campy, kinky 1954 Western JOHNNY GUITAR is actually a thinly veiled critique of McCarthyism. Championed by French critics long before it became a cult classic here, the film added feminism and Freud to the frontier-movie mix. Joan Crawford plays a tough, gun-totin', pants-wearin' saloon owner who locks horns over men and money with another local woman (Mercedes McCambridge), a half-cocked hothead who tries to run her out of town. The film co-stars Sterling Hayden, Ward Bond, Ernest Borgnine, and John Carradine. See it in a 35mm color print from Paramount Pictures on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Watch the trailer or watch Martin Scorsese introduce it.
Cinematheque partners with Cleveland Int'l Film Festival on presentation of French thriller STRANGER BY THE LAKE Once again the Cinematheque partners with the Cleveland Int’l Film Festival on one of their films showing at Tower City Cinemas downtown. This year’s co-presentation, Alain Guiraudie's new French film STRANGER BY THE LAKE, is one of 2014’s most acclaimed must-see movies, with a 95% “fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes.com! The movie is set on the banks of a peaceful, secluded body of water in rural France, where gay men spend the summer cruising for companionship. One of these men, Franck, finds himself drawn to an attractive and mysterious stranger who emanates danger and may even be a killer. Perversely, this does not dampen Franck’s desire. Guiraudie’s breakthrough work is a taut, cinematic thriller that evokes Hitchcock and Polanski. No one under 18 will be admitted when it shows Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Special admission is $14; CIFF members and (on day of show) students & seniors $12. Use code “CINE” and save $2 off your ticket price to this or any regular CIFF screening. No Cinematheque passes, Cinematheque twofers, or Cinematheque radio winners will be accepted.
