Utilizing Photoshop and Illustrator for an Interesting Technique

02/26/14  |  Posted by Leah Yochman  |  Posted in Digital Creativity

There are many artists who inspire me and one of them is Liu Zheng, aka 96K. His work is a unique mesh of photos and drawings. I like the technique he uses in some of his work including Chelsea Girls, Lust, and Neighbors in the Summer. I wanted to do something similar and I am going to share with you how I did it!

Gather Assets

Either find a picture of your own or take one that you would like to do this technique with. Take pictures of objects, people, and places you will want to incorporate.

Shaping Up

Once you have your picture, import it into Adobe Illustrator. You will be using the pen tool to create shapes on the picture. Using the pen tool, look at your picture and find areas that you want to trace a shape to put a different picture, color, or gradient in. When you are tracing over them make the “Fill” white and turn the “Stroke” off.

Turn the layer with your picture on it off and the document should look like a blank white document. This is good don’t worry, we are doing this because once you open the file in Photoshop it will get rid of the background.

Switch to Photoshop

Open your original picture in Photoshop. Create a new layer and import the Illustrator file with your shapes into Photoshop as well.

Import the pictures you want to use into Photoshop one at a time to make your life easier.

Place your photo over top of the shape and move it around until the part of the picture you want is in the middle. Use the magic wand tool to select the first shape you want to swap out for a picture. Make sure you have the layer with the shape on it selected. Once it’s selected press “Shift”+ “Command” + “I” to inverse what you have selected. Select the layer with your picture on it and press the “Delete” key on your keyboard to delete the photo outside the shape.

Gradient and Color

You can also use the magic wand tool to select a shape, decide on a plain color, and use the paint bucket tool to create a solid color shape. Another option is to do the same thing and then select the gradient tool from the toolbar and have a shape with a color or black and white gradient. Those are not the only options so feel free to experiment!
