8/29-9/1: Tom Jones, Ingrid Bergman/Jean Renoir & more!

TOM JONES marks 50th anniversary
Tony Richardson's 1963 British comedy TOM JONES won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. (It was nominated for six others.) This exuberant, innovative, hugely enjoyable adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel stars Albert Finney as a handsome young bastard who has a series of randy misadventures in 18th-century England. The all-star supporting cast includes Susannah York, Hugh Griffith, Edith Evans, and many others. Playwright John Osborne wrote the screenplay. See it in 35mm on Saturday or Sunday. Here's the original trailer.

Radiant Ingrid Bergman stars in Jean Renoir's romance ELENA AND HER MEN
Ingrid Bergman, Jean Marais, and Mel Ferrer star in Jean Renoir'sELÉNA AND HER MEN, a colorful 1956 French/Italian bauble set in 1880s Paris. The movie focuses on a radiant but impoverished Polish princess who must choose a husband from her many admirers. Claude Renoir did the color cinematography. See it in 35mm on Saturday or Sunday.

Greek epic THE WEEPING MEADOW concludes Cultural Gardens Film Fest
Greece’s Theo Angelopoulos, one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, died unexpectedly in 2012 when he was struck by a motorcycle while shooting a new movie. His 2004 epic THE WEEPING MEADOW is one of his best films. Spanning the years 1919-49, the movie focuses on Eleni, a Greek orphan girl taken in by another Greek family. Eleni marries her new widower father, though she really loves her adoptive brother Alexis. When she and Alexis run away together, they set in motion a father-and-son conflict with mythic overtones. This elemental drama of patriarchy and rebellion is set against a backdrop of floods, fascism, war, and civil strife. Angelopoulos tells his allegorical tale in his usual grand fashion, with stunning cinematography, stately long takes, monumental set pieces, and haunting music. If you like Tarkovsky, Antonioni, Tarr, and Jancso, then you must discover Angelopoulos. TV Guide.com says "there are moments of such breathtaking grace and artistry that you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re watching the most beautiful movie ever made.” See this two hour and 50 minute epic in 35mm on Thursday or Friday.

Dostoevsky's "Crime & Punishment" is inspiration for gripping STUDENT
In STUDENT, a college film student in present-day Almaty commits a senseless robbery and murder. This new movie by master Kazakh filmmaker Darezhan Omirbayev (KILLER) is a fleet, spare adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and one of his best works.Variety calls STUDENT “a stark, Bressonian tale," commenting that "Omirbayev once again offers a quietly scathing portrait of his homeland, which, on the evidence here, is on the verge of losing its soul in the pursuit of Range Rovers, banal soap operas and other ephemeral pleasures.” Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere (in 35mm) on Saturday or Sunday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!(Limit two discount admissions per print-out) This film is co-presented by the Global Film Initiative and is part of the Global Lens 2013 film series. For more information, visit www.globalfilm.org. Print from GFI. Watch a trailer here.

Sept-Oct film schedule announced
