60 Looney Tunes cartoons coming to the Cinematheque
about 8 hours ago via Facebook
Assistant Professor Barry Underwood had a busy, productive sabbatical last year. He traveled to half a dozen national parks around the western U.S. to scout locations and take photographs for a new project; completed two artist residencies in New England; took part in nine exhibitions; was featured in more than a dozen magazine and website articles; and rounded out the year with four of his prints selected for Akron Art Museumís permanent photography collection. Tarkovsky's 1983 masterwork NOSTALGHIA returns in new color print!
Andrei Tarkovsky’s penultimate film NOSTALGHIA (1983) was the first movie he made outside of the USSR. Shot in Italy, it is a melancholy, poetic tale of alienation, exile, and homesickness. A Russian poet and musicologist (Oleg Yankovsky) experiences a crisis of confidence and faith while visiting Tuscany to research the life of a little-known 18th-century Russian composer. But the village’s mysterious lunatic (Erland Josephson) claims to have a remedy for the traveler’s despair. Long unavailable on film in the U.S. (we last showed it in 1987!), this essential work will be presented in a new 35mm color print on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. It should not be missed. Here's the trailer for the video release, but this is one film you don't want to watch on a TV, computer, or smartphone screen!
Wajda's ASHES AND DIAMONDS is gripping tale of post-WWII Poland
Andrzej Wajda's fourth feature ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958) is one of the greatest Polish films ever made. At the close of WWII, Maciek, a young Polish Resistance fighter, is ordered to kill the new Communist district leader. But a budding love affair makes him realize that he has grown weary of violence and bloodshed. Wajda imbues his war movie with baroque imagery and film noir style. Maciek is played by Zbigniew Cybulski, an iconic star of post-WWII Polish cinema who is often called the "Polish James Dean" because of his rebel persona and accidental death at age 39. See it in 35mm on Thursday or Friday.
Jacques Rivette's just-released-in-America LE PONT DU NORD (1981) makes its belated Cleveland debut
LE PONT DU NORD (THE NORTH BRIDGE), a never-before-released-in-America film by French New Wave master Jacques Rivette, is a more sinister companion piece to his celebrated trip down the rabbit hole CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING. Like that peripatetic 1974 puzzler, this 1981 film focuses on two women, here an ex-con and a motorcyclist (Bulle Ogier and her real-life daughter Pascale). In this movie the duo discovers documents in a stolen briefcase that point to a nefarious conspiracy. Possessing a map that turns wintry Paris into an elaborate board game, they embark on a labyrinthine quest to unravel the plot via signs, codes, billboards, and other clues in plain sight. When LE PONT DU NORD opened earlier this year in NYC, Time Out New York called it "playfully profound," commenting that "there are few artists better than Rivette at uncovering the magical in the everyday." Catch its Cleveland premiere on Saturday or Sunday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
Colorful 1954 classic FRENCH CANCAN is Jean Renoir's "Moulin Rouge"
The founding of Paris’ Moulin Rouge cabaret and the training of its famous dancing girls are brought to exuberant life in Jean Renoir’sFRENCH CANCAN, a colorful 1954 extravaganza that conjures up the world of the French impressionists. Jean Gabin, Maria Félix, and Edith Piaf star in this color classic that shows in 35mm on Saturday and Sunday. Watch the trailer for a recent British re-release of the movie here.
Late filmmaker Les Blank is remembered with two of his music/food films
Longtime independent filmmaker Les Blank, who died in April at age 77, was a cultural ethnographer who celebrated regional American food and roots music in a series of acclaimed documentaries. He directed over 40 films in a career that spanned five decades. Tonight, in tribute, we present two works of his that are on the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." CHULAS FRONTERAS (1976), a spirited snapshot of conjunto or norteño music of the Tex-Mex border, features such performers as Flaco Jiménez and Lydia Mendoza. GARLIC IS AS GOOD AS TEN MOTHERS (1980) is a flavorful celebration of the “stinking rose,” and features interviews with chefs, fans, and historians. See both in 16mm on Saturday night.
