BARBARA, Germany’s official entry for this year’s foreign language film Oscar, is one of the most gripping and acclaimed movies of 2012. (On metacritic.com it has unanimous favorable reviews and an overall rating of 87 out of 100.) Nina Hoss, the regular muse of director Christian Petzold (YELLA, JERICHOW), plays a surgeon in 1980 East Germany who is demoted to a small rural hospital on the Baltic Sea after she expresses a desire to leave the repressive GDR. There, under the watchful eyes of a Stasi spies, she continues to plot her escape. Catch this movie's exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

Moviegoers loved Paolo Sorrentino's odd but endearing road movie THIS MUST BE THE PLACE when we showed it in January—so we’re bringing it back. Sean Penn plays Cheyenne, a retired American rock star with Edward Scissorhands-like features (black hair, pasty face, red lips, timid voice) who lives in Dublin but returns to the U.S. when his estranged, Holocaust-survivor father is dying. Pretty soon Cheyenne finds himself a reluctant avenging angel, traversing America to locate and kill the aged ex-Nazi who humiliated his dad at Auschwitz. But this movie is no revenge Götterdämmerung à la Quentin Tarantino. It’s a gentle, gorgeous, often funny fable about growing up and finding wisdom—and one of the overlooked gems of 2012. Poetic French horror film EYES WITHOUT A FACE, saluted in "Holy Motors," returns
Georges Franju's poetic 1959 French horror film EYES WITHOUT A FACE is one of the movies most frequently referenced in Leos Carax’s HOLY MOTORS (shown Feb. 14 & 17); the two films even share the same co-star, Edith Scob. Pierre Brasseur plays a mad plastic surgeon who kidnaps beautiful young women and then attempts to transplant their faces onto his daughter who was disfigured in a car crash. Alida Valli (THE THIRD MAN) co-stars in this surrealistic nightmare that shows in 35mm on Saturday and Sunday. Here's the original trailer.

16mm films from Ann Arbor Film Festival and Richard Myers show on Thursday
Ten filmmakers who have bucked the digital tide by working on 16mm film are represented in this new compilation 16MM FILMS FROM THE 50TH ANN ARBOR FILM FESTIVAL. Culled from last year’s milestone edition of America’s oldest showcase for independent and experimental cinema, the program includes "Landfill 16, " a new film by renowned artist Jennifer Reeves, who constructed her movie by burying and hand-painting outtakes from a previous work. Supplementing the program will be "The Path" (USA, 1961), the first 16mm short by longtime northeast Ohio filmmaker Richard Myers, a frequent Ann Arbor prizewinner and “a master of visionary cinema” according to scholar Amos Vogel. See this program, which is supported by the Charles Lang Bergengren Memorial Film Fund, on Thursday night.
