CIA Professors Doug Paige and Bob Martinez will be teaching the Pre-College course, Industrial Design, this summer. Doug has been a Professor of Industrial Design at CIA since 1988 where he also teaches Designing for Sustainability and Biomimicry. Type Specimen is an application by Suitcase Type Foundry that gives users a multitude of options for mixing, matching, and combining fonts in sample layouts. Preview new font families on the home screen, search for a specific font, or tap and swipe to explore any specimen, its weights and styles, definition, basic information, and OpenType features. Pinch to magnify the view of glyphs in any font set, and tap the star icon to mark a font as a favorite. Once you’ve done some exploring, return to the main menu by swiping upwards with two fingers, and tap ‘Combine.’ This amazing feature allows you to preview every Suitcase font in a sample layout, where editing is as simple as sliding each heading and subheading back and fourth (or shuffling) to create the perfect combination! The only downside to this application is the high price of fonts from the Suitcase Type Foundry - great for your inner typographer/explorer, but don’t fall in love too quickly. The app, however, is available for free in iTunes!
