SIMON & THE OAKS is epic tale of two boys in pre- and post WWII Sweden
The L.A. Times says that Lisa Ohlin's 2011 Swedish film SIMON & THE OAKS is “a two-hour theatrical feature that has the kind of emotional and storytelling reach regularly found these days only in cable TV miniseries.” Based on a Swedish bestseller, the film follows two teenage boys as they come of age in Gothenburg between 1939 and 1952. Simon (Bill Skarsgård, son of Stellan) is a teen misfit from a working class family who is seduced by the world of books, art, and music in which his Jewish friend Isak grows up. Isak, on the other hand, discovers the joy of working with his hands that Simon’s father can teach him. The New York Times designated SIMON & THE OAKS a “Critics’ Pick, " calling it "exhilarating," "exquisite," and "epic." Catch its exclusive Cleveland showing (in a 35mm color & scope print) on Saturday or Sunday.

Harry Belafonte & Robert Ryan star in 1959 noir drama ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW
Harry Belafonte stars in Robert Wise's 1959 crime film ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW, the first noir drama with a black protagonist. He also produced the movie, hiring blacklisted screenwriter Abraham Polonsky (also the director of FORCE OF EVIL, coming 2/16) to co-write the script. Robert Ryan, Shelley Winters, and Gloria Grahame co-star in the taut thriller, which follows two men, a debt-ridden gambler (Belafonte) and a racist ex-con (Ryan), as they team up for a bank heist. See it in a 35mm print on Saturday or Sunday. Sunday's showing will be introduced by Phil Skerry, longtime film professor at Lakeland Community College. Phil regards the film as one of the great overlooked noir titles and has met and talked to Robert Wise. Here's a murky version of the film's original trailer.

Raccoon-like creatures impersonate humans in delightful eco-anime POM POKO
POM POKO, a 1994 Japanese animated feature by Studio Ghibli’s co-founder Isao Takahata, focuses on a group of magical tanuki, mischievous raccoon-like animals from Japanese folklore that are capable of changing their shapes. When a new development threatens their forest, the tanuki transform into humans and start playing tricks on the workers—in order to make them think the construction site is haunted! See it in a 35mm subtitled print on Saturday or Sunday. Print this email and present it at the box office and see POM POKO for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)

Letters and words give way to images in Hollis Frampton's seminal ZORN'S LEMMA
The poetic 1970 experimental film ZORN'S LEMMA is one of the seminal masterworks of structural cinema. It is also the most famous movie by the late Hollis Frampton, who attended Western Reserve University for three-and-a-half years during the 1950s but never graduated. Named for a mathematical axiom relating to set theory, the movie is a three-part work that moves beyond the alphabet, beyond words to create a highly structured lexicon of patterned images. It will show on Friday, preceded by Frampton’s 1969 short "Prince Ruperts Drops." This program is supported by the Charles Lang Bergengren Memorial Film Fund.

Tarkovsky's sci-fi epic SOLARIS returns to the big screen in 35mm color & scope print!
Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 philosophical sci-fi epic SOLARIS has long been regarded as the Soviet 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. (Tarkovsky, a Christian, reputedly made it as a response to the “atheism” of the Kubrick film.) The movie follows a psychologist who is sent to a distant space station to learn what is killing some of the cosmonauts there and causing others to see visions. The key seems to be the nearby, “sentient” planet of Solaris. See this poetic classic in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Friday. Here's Sovexportfilm's original trailer (disregard the English dubbing; our print will be subtitled).
