Blog . Sept 6 - 9: Fahrenheit 451, Pina, Celine & Julie and More!
FAHRENHEIT 451 shows as tribute to sci-fi author Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012.
Julie Christie and Oskar Werner star in François Truffaut’sFAHRENHEIT 451 , the French filmmaker’s first color film and only film in English. It’s an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s futuristic tale of a TV-saturated society in which books are banned and burned, and firemen start fires. See this 1966 classic, with music by Bernard Herrmann, in a 35mm print on Saturday or Sunday. Here’s the original theatrical trailer.
An encore for Wim Wenders’ new dance classic PINA
Wim Wenders (WINGS OF DESIRE, THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB) celebrates the groundbreaking work of his friend and fellow German, legendary dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (1940-2009), in PINA . His Oscar-nominated 2011 movie captures Bausch and her company members performing some of her most celebrated works on stage and around the German city of Wuppertal, home of Bausch’s dance theatre since 1972. Don’t miss it in 2D on Saturday or Sunday. (Please allow extra time to park on Saturday night.)
Rivette’s CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING receives rare screening in new color print
On Thursday and Friday we show a new 35mm color print of Jacques Rivette’s 1974 French masterpiece CÉLINE AND JULIE GO BOATING , hailed by critic David Thomson as “the most innovative film since CITIZEN KANE.” The three-hour-and-twelve-minute movie is a surreal fantasy in which two young Parisian women (a nightclub magician and a librarian) trade identities, enter a mysterious mansion, interact with the house’s real or imaginary inhabitants, and get caught up in a Gothic murder melodrama that’s forever unfolding there. Inspired by two Henry James stories, this dreamy, whimsical, playful work celebrates fiction, cinema, and imagination. It evokes Borges, Proust, Kafka, Cocteau, Hitchcock, and Lewis Carroll—and predicts Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DR. Special admission is $12, members and CIA I.D. holders $9, ages 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Here’s the original trailer — silent, for some reason.
Potent ELENA depicts money-grubbing Russians
ELENA , the new drama from Russia’s Andrei Zvyagintsev (THE RETURN), has the fourth highest overallmetacritic.com rating (87 out of 100) of any movie released this year! The film is a critique of the new Russia—the haves, the have-nots, and the must-haves—as they jockey for wealth and trample moral qualms in the process. Elena is a middle-aged, proletarian nurse who has married a well-to-do older man, Vladimir, a former patient. Both have grown children from previous marriages—a ne’er-do-well son in Elena’s case and a reckless, estranged daughter in Vladimir’s. But when Vladimir suffers a heart attack, they all begin to wonder: who will inherit his money when he dies? See ELENA during its exclusive Cleveland premiere engagement on Saturday or Sunday; please allow extra time to park on Saturday night.
