Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline star in poetic, heartbreaking love story SOPHIE’S CHOICE
Meryl Streep won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in Alan J. Pakula’s poetic, moving 1982 film version of William Styron’s SOPHIE’S CHOICE . Streep plays Sophie Zawistowski, a tormented Polish Catholic immigrant who survived Auschwitz and now shares a house in postwar Brooklyn with a brilliant but temperamental Jewish lover (Kevin Kline, also superb). A third roommate, Southerner and aspiring writer Peter MacNicol, is also in love with Sophie, and seeks to know why she is so tortured. The great Nelson Almendros (DAYS OF HEAVEN) did the exquisite color cinematography. See SOPHIE’S CHOICE in a 35mm studio print on Saturday or Sunday.

Recovering drug addict struggles to stay clean in sobering OSLO, AUGUST 31st
The new Norwegian film OSLO, AUGUST 31ST , Joachim Trier’s follow-up to his celebrated 2006 feature REPRISE, is one of the best reviewed movies of the year! (It has an overall metacritic.com score of 82 out of 100 http://www.metacritic.com/movie/oslo-august-31st. Its Rotten Tomatoes “fresh” rating is 98!) Anders Danielsen Lie delivers another great performance—this time as a recovering 34-year-old heroin addict who receives a day pass from his rehab center so he can go to a job interview in Oslo. As he reconnects with people and places from his previous life, he struggles to stay clean — and it is agony. Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday (August 31!) or Saturday.

S. Korean comedy THE DAY HE ARRIVES: the plight of a pathetic film professor
“Hong Sang-soo does GROUNDHOG DAY” says Time Out New York about the unique new film by the contemporary South Korean master. THE DAY HE ARRIVES (which has an overall metacritic.com score of 83 out of 100 http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-day-he-arrives and a 93 “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes) is another funny-sad compendium of pathetic behavior in which a former movie director turned provincial film professor spends a three-day weekend in Seoul. But each day’s activities—wandering around the city, drinking with bar-mates, reconnecting with an old girlfriend—are so similar that he seems caught up in an endless loop of disappointment and failure. Salon.com calls THE DAY HE ARRIVES “among (Hong’s) very best…a strange mixture of magic, mystery, rueful melodrama and dry comedy that’s like absolutely nothing else.” See it Thursday or Sunday. Please allow extra time to park on 8/30 due to a CIA gallery opening that night. Here’s the film’s trailer.

PINK RIBBONS, INC. lambastes corporate breast-cancer charities
Léa Pool’s angry new film PINK RIBBONS, INC. argues that the grassroots movement to cure breast cancer has been co-opted by large philanthropic organizations geared primarily toward marketing pink paraphernalia and promoting feel-good walks and races, as well as by corporations whose products may be contributing to the spread of the disease. Contending that pharmaceutical solutions have taken precedence over prevention, the filmmakers also question how much of the money raised actually goes to cancer research. The NY Times says the movie “deserves to be seen.” And you can do just that on Thursday or Friday.

THIS IS NOT A FILM documents Jafar Panahi’s apartment-bound life in Tehran
Master Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi (THE WHITE BALLOON, THE CIRCLE, OFFSIDE) is currently under house arrest in Tehran while appealing a six-year prison sentence and a 20-year-ban on filmmaking. In THIS IS NOT A FILM , he uses digital video to document a day in his apartment-bound life. The result, which was smuggled out of Iran to the Cannes Film Festival on a flash drive hidden in a cake (!), is one of the year’s most subversive and acclaimed whatsits. It has an overall metacritic.com score of 90 out of 100 (making it the second-best reviewed movie released in 2012!) and a 100% “fresh” rating (unanimous favorable reviews) on RottenTomatoes.com. Don’t miss it Saturday or Sunday.
