Touching QUILL: THE LIFE OF A GUIDE DOG is the family film of the year! The Japanese film QUILL: THE LIFE OF A GUIDE DOG is a touching fiction-documentary hybrid that follows a yellow Lab named Quill as he grows from an adorable puppy into a highly trained seeing-eye dog. But he really has his work cut out for him when he is placed with a cranky Japanese man who doesn't want to be led around by an animal. Salon calls QUILL "the family film of the year." See the subtitled movie on Friday or Saturday. Here's the trailer.
"Double Indemnity" stars reunite in Douglas Sirk's THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW Douglas Sirk's 1950s melodramas subverted that decade's prevalent notion of the "happy American home." His 1956 movie THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW, produced by Cleveland's Ross Hunter, reunited DOUBLE INDEMNITY stars Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. It tells of a toy manufacturer trapped in a dull marriage who is tempted to stray when an old flame, now a glamorous designer, re-enters his life. Joan Bennett co-stars. Cineaste magazine calls it "one of Sirk's greatest, most fully-realized accomplishments…In the front rank of Sirk masterpieces." See it Friday or Saturday in a 35mm print from the Universal Pictures studio archive. There's no tomorrow if you miss it!
ABENDLAND is chilly, detached study of high-tech modern Europe at night In the 2011 Austrian film ABENDLAND, Europe's obsession with technology and security is depicted in a series of visually stunning vignettes shot at night in 10 different countries. As he did in OUR DAILY BREAD, his emotionally cool 2005 overview of industrial food production in Europe, director Nikolaus Geyrhalter shuns music, interviews, and narration in favor of chilly, dispassionate, gorgeously lensed long shots; here he focuses on border patrols, beer halls, sex clubs, nursing homes, raves, et al. The end result is a dyspeptic portrait of modern Europe far removed from travel brochures. Catch the Ohio premiere of this movie on Friday or Saturday. Watch the unsubtitled trailer here .
VERTIGO topples CITIZEN KANE in latest "Sight & Sound" critics poll After a five-decade reign as the "greatest film of all time," Orson Welles' CITIZEN KANE has been deposed by Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO in the latest, once-a-decade critics poll conducted by Britain's Sight & Sound magazine. VERTIGO is just one of a number of Sight & Sound "winners" that we will screen from 35mm prints in September and October. Our new calendars should be available on August 23 or 24.
