July 12-15: Juan Of The Dead, Marley, The Deep Blue Sea & More!

Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston star in THE DEEP BLUE SEA, one of 2012's best. Rachel Weisz (superb) and Tom Hiddleston (THE AVENGERS) play illicit lovers in post-WWII Britain in THE DEEP BLUE SEA , the latest nostalgia trip by master British filmmaker Terence Davies. Set in postwar London, the film focuses on the young wife of a High Court judge who has an affair with a reckless ex-RAF pilot and discovers sexual passion for the first time. Once again Davies' feel for 1940s/1950s British life is extraordinary, and the film is dreamy, painterly, romantic, sensuous, and moving. This is one of the most acclaimed movies of the past year, with an overall metacritic.com rating of 82 (out of 100). From a Terrence Rattigan play. Take the plunge Saturday or Sunday. Terence Davies' 1992 masterpiece, THE LONG DAY CLOSES (see below), also shows on Saturday and Sunday. One can see both films back to back on either day for an additional $5. Terence Davies' THE LONG DAY CLOSES recalls a childhood spent at the movies Here's a new 35mm color print of Terence Davies' exquisite 1992 memory piece THE LONG DAY CLOSES , in which the master British filmmaker returns to the world of his childhood-1950s working-class Liverpool. Bud, an impressionable 11-year-old living with his mother and older siblings, finds his dreams nourished at the neighborhood movie house. The film's nostalgia is rendered in one stunning image after another and is buttressed by an eclectic, evocative soundtrack of hymns, popular songs, classical music, radio broadcasts, and movie soundtracks. Don't miss it Saturday or Sunday. Davies' latest film, THE DEEP BLUE SEA (see above), also shows on Saturday and Sunday. For only $5 more you can see both movies on the same day. Satirical comedy JUAN OF THE DEAD is Cuba's first zombie movie Alejandro Brugués' JUAN OF THE DEAD , Cuba's first zombie movie, is a shambling black comedy with a sharp satirical bite. When creatures in tattered clothes looking dazed, hungry, and sick start stumbling around Havana, local layabout Juan thinks nothing of it-just another day of deprivation in Castro's Cuba. But when their numbers grow, and the ineffectual government dismisses them as U.S.-sponsored "dissidents," Juan sees a business opportunity: he will become the exterminator of the undead. UK's The Guardian says that "this wacky zombie comedy exploits to the full this genre's juicy potential for satire." Adults can see it Thursday or Friday. Paul Leni's THE CAT AND THE CANARY: a spooky silent movie for Friday the 13th THE CAT AND THE CANARY is a stylish 1927 silent horror-comedy, made in Hollywood by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni, that created the template for subsequent "old dark house" movies-and for Universal's horror pictures of the 1930s. Based on a 1920s Broadway hit, it's a moody movie in which a group of relatives gathers in a decaying mansion for the reading of a rich man's will. The designated heir stands to inherit a lot of money as long as she is not insane-and a nerve-wracking night in the spooky old house with avaricious family members just might send her over the edge! See it Friday in a color-tinted print with a music track. See HERE now! Boxoffice magazine says that Braden King's new movie HERE "restores your faith in the cinema." It's a dreamy, ravishingly photographed tone poem about two out-of-place loners-an American cartographer (Ben Foster) and a Paris-based Armenian photographer (Lubna Azabel of INCENDIES)-who team up to explore the Armenian countryside while also charting the human heart. The New York Times designated it a "Critics Pick" and called it "a stunner." See it in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday or Sunday. Epic MARLEY profiles reggae legend The life, music, and legacy of Jamaica's reggae superstar Bob Marley (1945-1981) is the subject of Kevin Macdonald's warts-and-all epic documentary MARLEY , one of the year's most acclaimed movies. It includes vintage film clips, rare musical performances, and interviews with those who knew the musician, including Jimmy Cliff and Marley's son Ziggy. See it Saturday only.
