4/24-27: Bernard Hermann weekend with CITIZEN KANE, MARNIE & more!
Blog . Aug 2-4: Director Larry Peerce In Person, Psycho (1998), Boy & More!
Hollywood director Larry Peerce appears in person with his shot-in-Ohio 1964 classic ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO On Saturday, August 4 , we mark our 26th anniversary at the Cleveland Institute of Art with a special appearance by longtime Hollywood director Larry Peerce, who will present two of his best early films. Peerce, the son of Metropolitan Opera star Jan Peerce, directed over 50 movies and TV shows in a career that spanned five decades. Among his works are feature films GOODBYE COLUMBUS, THE BIG T.N.T. SHOW, and THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN and episodes of TV's "Branded," "Batman," and "The Wild Wild West." At 5:30 pm we will show Peerce's first feature ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO , one of the landmark movies of the 1960s. This indie classic, which was shot in Painesville, was the first American movie to deal with interracial marriage. Barbara Barrie plays a divorced woman who marries an African American man (Bernie Hamilton), then finds herself embroiled in a nasty child custody case with her racist ex-husband (Richard Mulligan). Barrie won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her performance. Larry Peerce will answer audience questions after the screening. No passes, twofers, or radio winners. (See below for another Larry Peerce film.) Larry Peerce presents his intense 1967 New York subway thriller THE INCIDENT THE INCIDENT (1967) is Larry Peerce's other major film of the 1960s (see previous blurb). It is also the movie he is proudest of. THE INCIDENT is a harrowing tale of two young punks who terrorize the passengers of a NYC subway car. The great cast includes Tony Musante, Martin Sheen (making his screen debut), Beau Bridges, Brock Peters, Jack Gilford, Thelma Ritter, Ruby Dee, and Ed McMahon. Many of the scenes were shot secretly in the NYC subway system after the New York Transit Authority denied permission to film there. Larry Peerce will answer audience questions after the screening, which begins at 8 pm on Saturday. (The film will be shown in a 35mm print from the Twentieth Century Fox studio archive.) No passes, twofers, or radio winners; second film discount price for this movie is $7. BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW salutes 1970s-1980s cult and midnight movies Cult and midnight movies from the 70s & 80s (Kubrick, Carpenter, Cronenberg, et al.) are saluted in BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, a new psychedelic sci-fi head trip from the son of director George P. Cosmatos (RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II). Set in 1983 at a prison-like compound that is part utopian commune, part mental institution, the film focuses on a malevolent doctor's attempts to break through to one of his patients (a mute girl with psychic powers) using a variety of experimental drugs. A synthesizer score enhances the retro, fever dream visuals. The Village Voice calls it "a brilliantly executed lark." See it Thursday or Friday. Here's the trailer. Vince Vaughn and Julianne Moore star in Gus Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore, Viggo Mortensen, and William H. Macy star in Gus Van Sant's color, shot-for-shot remake of Hitchcock's classic slasher movie PSYCHO . Derided when first released, the film deserves a second chance-especially when you consider that Van Sant's subsequent features include ELEPHANT, LAST DAYS, PARANOID PARK, and MILK, some of the most acclaimed and daring American movies of the past 10 years! See PSYCHO Thursday or Friday. Watch the trailer. New Zeland coming-of-age comedy BOY returns to delight more moviegoers Audiences loved Taika Waiti's funny, whimsical New Zealand coming-of-age story BOY when we premiered it in June. So we're bringing it back for one more show on Friday. Set in a rural village in eastern New Zealand in 1984, the movie focuses on an 11-year-old, Michael Jackson-loving Maori boy who lives with relatives while his dad is in prison. The boy worships his absent father, and casts him in fantastic daydreams as a versatile and charismatic hero. But when Dad (played by writer-director Waiti) turns up out of the blue one day, childish imagination gives way to grown-up reality. This crowd-pleaser is the highest grossing Kiwi movie in New Zealand film history. See it and you'll know why.
