May 25-26: Miss Bala, Declaration Of War & Jerry Lewis!

Mexican thriller MISS BALA is exciting tale of beauty & drug-dealing beasts! MISS BALA , Mexico's official submission for this year's foreign-film Oscar, is one of the most acclaimed movies of the past year: a darkly comic and stylish thriller in which an aspiring beauty queen from a poor Tijuana family accidentally falls in with a drug lord and his criminal gang. But her pageant dreams sort of come true when she is transformed into a glamorous and fashionable moll. Director Gerardo Naranjo (DRAMA/MEX, I'M GONNA EXPLODE) won the Cleveland Int'l Film Festival's "Someone To Watch" Award in 2009. The New York Times designated MISS BALA a "Critics' Pick" and called it "a first-rate art house thriller." Adults can see it Friday or Saturday when it receives its exclusive Ohio premiere in a 35mm color & scope print. Here's the trailer. Young French couple fights to save their child's life in DECLARATION OF WAR France's official submission for this year's foreign-film Oscar, Valérie Donzelli's DECLARATION OF WAR tells of two young parents, Roméo and Juliette (real-life couple Jérémie Elkaïm and director Donzelli), who mobilize every resource at their disposal when their young son is diagnosed with a brain tumor. This stylish, spirited movie with a great soundtrack was also co-written by the couple, whose own child faced a life-threatening illness. Screen International calls DECLARATION OF WAR "a joy to watch," commenting that "few viewers will fail to be moved and charmed." The New York Times pegged it a "Critics' Pick, " remarking that "this story of two people who transform fear into action is inspiring." And according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, "DECLARATION OF WAR deals with issues that may scare audiences away. Don't let it." Mobilize to see this movie in a 35mm color & scope print on Friday or Saturday. The presentation is supported by a generous grant from Maison Française de Cleveland. Jerry Lewis is THE LADIES MAN in his funny, stylish 1961 color comedy Jerry Lewis plays a misogynist who takes a job as handyman in a large boarding house for young, single women in his 1961 comedy THE LADIES MAN , one of the comedian's greatest movies as producer, director, and star. The film's enormous set (pictured above) is said to have inspired Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Tati, and Julien Temple. George Raft co-stars in this movie that shows in a vintage 35mm IB Technicolor print on Friday and Saturday. Oscar nominee IN DARKNESS added to Cinematheque schedule on Mon., June 4 Agnieszka Holland's 2011 Polish epic IN DARKNESS is a suspenseful historical drama that became one of the five nominees for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. But don't despair; the Cinematheque will show IN DARKNESS one time on Monday, June 4, at 7:00 pm. (We've got your back!) Regular admission prices apply.
