Mar 22-25: Three Stooges, Svankmajer's Alice, The Cinematheque At The Film Festival & More!

03/20/12  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

The Three Stooges at the Cinematheque? Soitenly! The Farrelly Brothers' new Three Stooges movie opens in less than two weeks. So the time is right to revisit the original threesome in some of their funniest two-reelers. Moe Howard, Curly Howard, and Larry Fine star in five of their best short films from the beginning of their long career in the program THE BEST OF THE THREE STOOGES I, 1934-1937 , showing Friday and Saturday. Program includes the Oscar-nominated Men in Black; Pop Goes the Easel, in which the Stooges are mistaken for art students; Movie Maniacs, which co-stars Mildred Harris, Chaplin's first wife; Grips, Grunts, and Groans; and Disorder in the Court, often cited as the trio's funniest film. All will be shown in beautiful 35mm prints from the Sony Pictures studio archive! We present a different program of Stooges classics next weekend! Jan ?vankmajer's ALICE is creepy, stop-motion version of "Alice in Wonderland" A perennial Cinematheque favorite since we premiered it in Cleveland in 1989, ALICE, the first feature by the great Czech animator and surrealist Jan ?vankmajer, is a perverse, sinister version of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The movie creates a claustrophobic dream world filled with creepy puppets and dolls brought to life via stop-motion animation and trick photography. Needless to say, it's not for children. See it in a 35mm color print from the Czech Republic on Friday or Saturday. Greek ALPS scales peaks of strangeness The Cinematheque once again partners with the Cleveland International Film Festival on the local premiere of an acclaimed new foreign-language film. This year's movie is ALPS, the most recent feature by Yorgos Lanthimos, the celebrated and controversial Greek director of the Oscar-nominated DOGTOOTH, which the Cinematheque premiered in Cleveland in 2010. Lanthimos' new film is as strange and unsettling as his first one. ALPS tells of four people who make money by impersonating people who have recently died, thus helping grieving survivors come to terms with the loss of their loved ones. Blending absurdist comedy with human tragedy, this tale of surrogates is truly one of a kind. This film will show on Saturday (at 8:45 pm) and Monday (at 4:35 pm) as part of the 36th Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, March 22-April 1 at Tower City Cinemas in downtown Cleveland. Special admission is $12; seniors & students on day of show and CIFF members $10. Mention the code "CINE" and save $2 off the ticket price -- not only to ALPS but to any festival movie. (Some restrictions apply.) Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.clevelandfilm.org, in person at Tower City Cinemas, or by calling 877-304-3456. Note that no Cinematheque passes, Cinematheque twofers, or Cinematheque radio winners will be honored for ALPS. BATTLE ROYALE, a pre-"Hunger Games" "Hunger Games," added to April line-up Everyone knows that the film version of THE HUNGER GAMES opens this weekend. But on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:15 pm at the Capitol Theatre, you can see the Japanese movie that may have inspired The Hunger Games, Kinji Fukasaku's 2000 Japanese fantasy BATTLE ROYALE. This tale of teenagers sent to a remote island where they must kill each other -- or die -- is one of the most notorious movies of the past decade. It's also hugely beloved by those who have seen it, and has long been one of the Cinematheque's most requested films. Shown during the 2001 Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, BATTLE ROYALE never got a theatrical release in the U.S. -- until now. However, it's a digital release only, which is why we're showing it at the Capitol, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. We will present the original uncut, uncensored, unrated version. People under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and no one under 15 will be admitted at all! $9 full-price tickets can be purchased in advance at www.clevelandcinemas.com.
