College student earns money as soporific sex object in SLEEPING BEAUTY Emily Browning (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, SUCKER PUNCH) stars in the elegantly filmed but unsettling Aussie erotic drama SLEEPING BEAUTY. It tells of a young college student who earns money as a scantily-clad server, and later as a sedated sex object, for wealthy old men. Selected for the main competition at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the first movie by novelist Julia Leigh has a chilliness and formal beauty that recall Kubrick. The Telegraph (UK) says that SLEEPING BEAUTY "titillates, terrifies and haunts in equal measure." No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that premieres exclusively on Friday and Saturday. It's presented in the U.S. by Jane Campion. Here's the trailer. 1977 color rarity THE DEVIL, PROBABLY opens 10-film Robert Bresson series "My sickness is that I see clearly," says the dispirited young protagonist in Robert Bresson's rarely shown 1977 drama THE DEVIL, PROBABLY , a portrait of civilization going to hell. Shot in elegant autumnal colors, the film shows how environmental destruction, the nuclear threat, greed, and spiritual emptiness instill in our despairing hero "no desire to be useful in a disgusting world." Rejecting the false hopes offered by politics, the Church, and psychoanalysis, he drifts toward death-which initially caused the film to be banned to minors in France as an incitement to suicide! Yet Richard Roud comments: "Even though Bresson has painted a dark picture of wasted youth and beauty, one comes out of the film with a sense of exaltation. When a civilization can produce a work of art as perfectly achieved as this, it is hard to believe that there is no hope for it." See it in a new 35mm color print on Saturday or Sunday. LONDON RIVER is a touching, human drama set in the aftermath of Britain's 9/11 LONDON RIVER is a touching drama from Rachid Bouchareb, the French-Arab director of the Oscar-nominated DAYS OF GLORY and OUTSIDE THE LAW. In the film, two very different single parents-a middle-aged, rural British widow (Brenda Blethyn) and a West African Muslim man (Sotigui Kouyaté)-scour London for their missing grown children in the wake of the city's July 7, 2005 terrorist bombings. See it Saturday or Sunday when it premieres exclusively at the Cinematheque. Read the review of the film from Time Out New York. Stunning, singular THE MILL AND THE CROSS returns for its third engagement! Did you ever wonder what it would be like to step into a great painting? Lech Majewski's amazing, one-of-a-kind film THE MILL AND THE CROSS lets you find out. Rutger Hauer, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael York star in this visually stunning new movie, in which Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 masterpiece "The Procession to Calvary" comes colorfully to life. In the painting, Christ is being led through a Flemish landscape dominated by a windmill atop a craggy stone tower. He is flanked by Spanish soldiers who occupied Flanders at the time, and accompanied by scores of peasants. Majewski tells the back stories of some of these figures in Bruegel's landscape, and the result is a hypnotic film certain to become a classic. See this English-language movie on Sunday afternoon. Antonio Banderas stars in Pedro Almodovar's wild, stylish THE SKIN I LIVE IN Pedro Almodóvar's latest film THE SKIN I LIVE IN harks back to the Spanish master's outré beginnings and reunites him with Antonio Banderas for the first time in 21 years. It's a wild, convoluted melodrama centered on a brilliant surgeon and tells an outlandish, macabre story of robbery, rape, disfigurement, imprisonment, torture, murder, suicide, and sexuality. It's also a ravishing, stylish, elegant piece of filmmaking. Adults only can see it Thursday or Friday when it shows for the first time in Cleveland in gorgeous 35mm! CityMusic Cleveland presents free screening of TEREZIN DIARY on Thursday In Dan Weissman's 1990 documentary TEREZIN DIARY, Holocaust survivors who were children at Terezin (Theresienstadt) recollect life in this "model" concentration camp established by the Nazis near Prague. Sold to the world as an idyllic compound where Jewish families could live together (and pursue the arts) shielded from the horrors of war, Terezin was in fact a way station for people headed to the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Catch a free screening of this film, courtesy of CityMusic Cleveland, on Thursday at 6:45 pm. A reception in the Institute of Art lobby, open to all, will precede the screening at 5:30 pm. CityMusic Cleveland will present Hans Krása's Brundibár, a children's opera that premiered at Terezin, May 1-5 at John Hay High School. For more information, visit www.citymusiccleveland.org.
