Case Professor Develops a Variety of Creative Applications

Jared Bendis, the Creative New Media Officer for Case Western Reserve University, is co-owner of Lemming Labs Limited: "a Software Development and Consulting Firm specializing in the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch mobile platforms" (Lemming Labs). Alongside Larry Hatch, Bendis has developed a variety of creative applications, notably the Kaleidoscopic Drawing program Mandalas. With forty-eight optional colors and multiple design modes, users can create symmetrical mandalas and save their work, contributing to the larger online Mandala Project. This continuously evolving collaborative work has been featured in a variety of exhibitions in Ohio, specifically IngenuityFest. IngenuityFest is a festival celebrating the combined efforts of art and technology, and detail their purpose as follows: Ingenuity's mission is to ignite the creative spark where the arts, science, and technology intersect. By animating Cleveland's urban spaces with world-class, innovative experiences, Ingenuity provides a unique platform to explore the boundaries of art and technology. Our core values are to showcase innovation through collaboration, promote excellence, inspire and engage new audiences, and energize and transform urban environments. Ingenuity provides the catalyst for creative connections among artists, innovators, and audiences. Through its annual Festival, educational outreach, and awareness-building efforts, Ingenuity revitalizes and reinterprets Cleveland" (ingenuitycleveland). Bendis at Ingenuity 2010: Collective Mandalas from Ingenuity 2010: Mandalas With Lemming Labs Limited's most popular application, one can create beautiful, symmetrical, kaleidoscopic designs simply by dragging their finger. Available for free, Mandalas comes with a palette of forty-eight colors for both the pen tool and background layer. Users can easily save creations to their iPad's photo album and explore various symmetry and randomization modes. HexDoodle Reminiscent of LightBright pegs, HexDoodle is a free painting application that allows users to group hexagonal dots of multiple sizes into a limitless number of images. Also featuring a wide-range palette of forty-eight colors and the option to save paintings, the possibilities are endless! Carve It Free and entertaining for all ages, Carve It gives users the fun of designing, carving, and lighting a jack-o-lantern without the mess! Using three different brush stroke sizes, users can draw in the negative space to be "carved" from the pumpkin, save their progress, and watch as their designs come to life. Mow It With this free lawn mowing paint program, users can touch to mow designs, messages, and patterns in a field of grass. With the options of Lawn Mower and Push Mower for composing and Weed Whacker for hacking intrusive dandelions, users can endlessly create and save their landscaping masterpieces with Mow It.
