Art books and art history books are a mixed bag. Often, the most famous pieces will get a good-sized image in the book... but so many are relegated to tiny thumbnails, with few details visible. Or, worse, they're printed in black and white. This great app hosts over 55,000 paintings and sculptures, from various periods in art history. There are "rooms" dedicated to Early Art, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, Modern, Contemporary and American works. It is a bit biased in that most of the work is from Europe/America, but it's still a valuable reference. Each art piece can be viewed in high resolution, and the app is easily searchable. You can even see what pieces are in museums near you, so you can see them in person. All you need is a wifi connection. The app is only $10, and comes with 10GB worth of art, including those you can't find easily on google due to copyright. Art Authority for iPad - $9.99.
