Blog . 9/15-18: The Battle For Brooklyn, Rejoice And Shout, Submarine & More!
Neighborhood activists and historic preservationists take on private developers in THE BATTLE FOR BROOKLYN. In Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley's new documentary THE BATTLE FOR BROOKLYN , a Brooklyn,NY graphic designer who refuses to relinquish his apartment finds himself the lastholdout to Forest City Ratner's massive Atlantic Yards development (16 high-rises and a New Jersey Nets basketball arena in Brooklyn's historic Prospect Heights neighborhood).T his gripping, true-life account of a reluctant activist-and the many other privatecitizens and business owners who fought the controversial project for almost a decade-was culled from almost 500 hours of footage shot over an eight-year period. Though this drama unfolds in NYC, it reverberates in Cleveland, where "blighted" neighborhoods have been targeted by eminent domain, and historic preservationists often lock horns with private developers. There will be a discussion of the issues raised in the movie after both the Friday and Saturday shows. REJOICE AND SHOUT is a rousing history of African-American Gospel music Don McGlynn's REJOICE AND SHOUT is an uplifting new documentary that traces the history of African-American Gospel music. The film includes interviews with music scholars as well as filmed performances by Mahalia Jackson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, the Staple Singers, the Edwin Hawkins Singers, multiple Grammy-winning Andraé Crouch, and many others. Say "Amen" on Saturday or Sunday. Tragedy brings estranged couple together in powerful BEAUTIFUL BOY In Shawn Ku's new drama BEAUTIFUL BOY , Mario Bello and Michael Sheen (THE QUEEN, FROST/NIXON) play an alienated married couple who come together when they learn that their 18-year-old son has committed a mass shooting at his college -- before taking his own life. Too raw and painful to play the multiplex, this acclaimed movie should find an appreciative audience at the Cinematheque. It premieres in Cleveland on Thursday and Sunday. FOOLISH WIVES is lesser-known silent masterpiece from the director of GREED In Erich von Stroheim's lavish 1922 silent film FOOLISH WIVES , the wife of an American diplomat falls for a fake Russian count (von Stroheim) who makes his living by seducing and extorting money from wealthy women in Monte Carlo. This sordid, sardonic, sophisticated spectacle was the most expensive Hollywood movie made up to that time. It's one of critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's Top 100 films (Rosenbaum appears in person at the Cinematheque on 10/3), and it's great. Don't miss it Saturday or Sunday! Teen passion runs silent, runs deep in delightful Brit coming of age comedy SUBMARINE An awkward, imaginative 15-year-old Welsh schoolboy pines for a female classmate and worries about his parents' marriage in SUBMARINE . Richard Ayoade's funny, touching coming-of-age film (from Britain) is both literate and lyrical, suggesting early movies by Truffaut, Godard, and other up-and-comers (but never aping them outright). Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine co-star. See this overlooked gem on Thursday or Friday; pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member) by printing this post and presenting it at the box office.
