A great app for getting to know the basics of 3D modeling, 123D Sculpt is currently free to install on your iPad! It's a ton of fun to play with; you can start with a number of bases (animals, vehicles, basic shapes, etc), and manipulate them however you'd like. Then take imported photographs and textures, and simply rub them onto your shape. It's incredibly intuitive. 123D Sculpt iTunes Link - FREE!
